Most of my terrain and figures do not have lights. But for "special projects" I have used pre-packaged stand alone stuff and kits. I have done some simple wire-your-own, both with a switch or on/off by putting in and taking out the battery.

In ages long gone, I had to make an extensible traffic light controller circuit for an EE class. It was driven by a push button to change state. Extensible meant you could plug another of the same circuit into it and it would continue to sequence in a synchronized manner. I was bored on the weekend, so I made 16 of them, mounted them on some 1'x1' street boards and made a 4x4 grid. Then I gave it to a friend to use with Judge Dredd RPGs (he used it in a 3x5 configuration) because he had an apartment and I was in a dorm with no room.

I've tried to put LED lighting in some features of my 3-D DOOM/Space Hulk sets, but for the most part I can use black light to make stuff "pop"…

Just finished some sci-fi objective markers from colored plastic slinkies and tea lights.

I tried one gaming building, but it didn't light very well. The light was buried in the middle of the building and I couldn't make it refract out the way it should appear.
Otherwise, nothing yet unless you count dioramas made with gaming minis.

Larry Reber did that for his Gettysburg Soldiers ACW game to simulate burning haystacks,etc.; especially for his Newton's Station scenario. Quite nicely done,too.

I do remember when I was about 10, that I had a metal Britain's searchlight, which had a torch bulb in it. I thought it would be much better with a permanent stronger light, so wired it up to the mains electricity. Fortunately I was not standing in front of it when I switched it on and the bulb exploded with a characteristic electric burning smell, which I can remember to this day.

I have some battery operated "candles" which I fully intend (honest) to wrap in black and red cotton wool and use as "burning tank" markers. Just haven't got around to it yet.
