In your opinion, why was Custer not scalped?

Some of the usual explanations:

* it was a sign of respect
* they did not recognize his body
* he was balding
etc.

Unrecognised and not enough hair to make it worthwhile, would be my guess. Now, Cooke on the other hand…

As I understand prior to setting out he had his hair cut very short – so as noted not enough hair to make it worthwhile

Did the Indians even know Custer was in command?

Best guess. His brother Tom Custer shot him in the head and ruined the scalp area. Many feel George Custer had been wound earlier in the battle and then shot by his Brother Tom, who was scalped.

Read Kate Bighead's account of the battlefield after the fight. Custer's fatal death wound was on his left temple. No tattooing, hence probably a long shot that dropped him so he is is alive on the hilltop until his death on Last Stand Hill. Curly's account places Custer alive and well at Calhoun Ridge which negates an earlier wound (most likely Algernon Smith of E Troop).
