What rules do people recommend for WWI plane battles? I am particularly interested in any rules that have historical scenarios or that have missions that aren't just pure dogfights – balloon busting, recon flights, etc.

I am aware that this has been discussed before. But the older discussions had a lot of links, and the links are now broken or go to unsupported sites. So looking for up to date suggestions!

There are many good ones that fit your criteria.

Wings of Glory, Dawn Patrol, Canvas Eagles, Aerodrome 1.1, Check Your Six, (not to be confused with Check Your 6), and many more.

If you prefer simpler and more visual, I recommend Wings of Glory. There are other, more complex games, but Wings just feels fun.

I'm reluctant to recommend anything, since it's not really my period. I play WWI dogfights for fun when other people run miniatures games, but I've never studied the subject.

There's a modification of Check Your 6! for WWI called Colorful Skies. This is a two-volume set of scenarios, with period-specific modifications in the front of book 1, but you still need the WWII rules to play it.

I still see Blue Max/Cavnas Eagles on the table once in a while, and it's free.

You should still be able to get Aerodrome 1.1.

Blue Max has been popular at a few conventions in the South. The system that has been played at every convention in 2019 is Ares Wings of Glory with planes. I have only seen one game using cards and that was a demo game.

Canvas Eagles, which, IIRC, is an update of the olde Blue Max rules.

Recommended, especially given the price.

Canvas Eagles rules the sky and like said it is an updated version of Blue max.

Best of all it is free! (well, actually best is that it is the best system)

I second TGerritsen's recommendations, plus there is a Blue Skies variant floating around the interwebs called Blue Skies Wood and Canvas that's pretty good.

Has anybody played "Hostile Aircraft"? I'm having the same conundrum regarding rules. I'm not a big fan of hex based games and couldn't really get into Wings of War.

Has anybody tried Canvas Falcons by Warbirds?
