I saw the advertisement of "French Armoured Cruisers" on TMP today from Pen & Sword Books. link I have just picked a copy have pre-ordered the book some months ago. I had previously purchased a "French Battleships of WWI" also by John Jordan and Philippe Caresse. I would recommend both volumes as be essential additions to the library for people interesting in the French navy during the period 1890-1918. For an overall discussion of French naval policy one should start with "The Development of a Modern Navy: French Naval Policy 1871-1904" and the rise of the "Jeune Escole" philosophy. The two works Jordan and Carasse are much more technical in nature showing how French navy policy was implemented. Clearly written and lavishly illustrated with both photographs and drawings. I would commend both books. For American readers, here are the Amazon links: link link |

When did the French navy adopt its motto, "To the water, it is the hour"? |

"To the water, it is the hour"? No: "To the water, it is the hour" = "A l'eau, c'est l'heure" which is a Frenchisized pronunciation of "hello, sailor" It's a joke. |

Totally agree w/ 138th SqdnRAF. These books by Jordan and Caresse are, from my Anglophone perspective at least, masterpieces of naval history. John Jordan is BTW also the editor of the Warship Annual series. B |

Naval Institute (US Rights) has a "Christmas Sale" ongoing now, 50% of cover price and free shipping. Almost certainly cheaper than Amazon. And I went and paid 40 UKP for Friedman's new book on British Submarines (Plus shipping!) a couple of months ago. But I do have the new (Spellmont) on Soviet Cavalry…. |
