I swear I can see spots on the middle Chestnut. Nice pictures.

I often do my horses by looking at a photograph and trying to copy it as best as I can

Agree, 14Bore, that is the best course to follow. I think we've all seen cavalry on the table where the horses are black, with white manes and tails. We don't have many of those down here in Kentucky.

I paint my horses similar to Britains Deetail: black, white (grey mane & tail), dark brown (black mane & tail) and all over light brown. Add white socks & blazes to taste… I gave up on subtle shades years ago and it hasn't hurt me any!

I confess, I bought the Foundry horse color set, I just need a set of horse pictures for all the different color options.

You are, not unusual, look at the black one, third pic, very rare to have strictly monochromatic horses. At our respective scales however that is irrelevant.

Spent the better part of an hour today with my daughter who is trying to eliminate or at least diminish a number of small white spots that just started to appear on one of her customer's chestnut mares. She prefers Lady Clairol!

I bought a cheap book at a Charity Shop which shows pictures of various breeds and how markings occur. I found for the Horse and Musket Era my most used reference book.

The most realistic results I have found is using oil paints which give that sheen that real horses have.

Lt. Lockwood, plenty of black horses with white tails and manes. Vice Versa too! On carousels.

Tango0128 Oct 2019 11:43 a.m. PST

Glad you like them too my friend!.

Always useful to have more pictures to use as a reference :-)

Chazzmack; I concede defeat, and I am am routed from the field. Your logic is irrefutable; I am once again put to shame by carousel horses (it is a long story). Be well, brother.
