I met a man who had been in the FFL in the late 1920's. He was "recruited" in court where he was given choice between prison or Legion. He chose the Legion. He served in North Africa & said he laughed himself silly watching Beau Geste. His comment was unprintable about how poorly the Legion was portrayed. He said they marched 10 miles to the rifle range in full uniform & gear, did their rifle practice then dug out the lead before returning to camp. Now I don't know how absolutely true this all was but it seemed true. He came to the USA & fought in WWII with the US Army in Europe. A more wirery character I've never met. Knownn as "Frenchy" to one & all.
