In the days when rules such as George Gush s WRG , Newbury and Tercio were what Renaissance wargamer's tended to use how was the interaction between pike and shot dealt with when a mixed unit was charged?
Any thoughts of trying any of these sets out ( for a trip down memory lane ) is stopped in the tracks by he thought of having to get the shot out of harms way. I suppose the shot are meant to be sub units and are meant to reaction test their out of trouble . Or did they hide amongst the pikes. Is it just too difficult to represent this in retro Wargaming ?

Egads, sirrah, those rules make my brain squibble. I would suggest For God King and Country for a slight retro style, or better yet Liber Militum: Tercios and the follow up set Kingdoms, for less squibblage of the ole brain cells. LMT uses one element basing for units, GKC had stands of pike and musket with rules for moving them to the front for fire, to the back for push of pike and hiding in the pikes for anti cav actions.( I think, been a long time since I played them)

I played Gush quite a bit. IIRC the rules required you to work out melee for each unit and it's sub units, one-by-one.

The problem with it was it was slow and painful to play.

I miss the days when Gush was the standard. Timmo is correct about the sequence of play and the time involved.

Thanks for the reply's . Every now and again I like to bring out the old rules for old time sake. Only problem is I never played Renaissance back in the 80s just Ancients and WW2 so in a sense the older Renaissance rules remind of the older Ancient rules etc which kinda of formed my war-gaming expectations

In Gush, shot that were a sub unit of a pike unit could fall back through the pike or advance through them.

Thanks DOUGKL
I give the rules another look through

Out local addendum to WRG was that when the charge started, the shot fired once then Infiltrated to the rear of the pike.
