I use old CDs to hold miniatures when I spray paint them, but I haven't actually seen an 8" floppy since … 1986? I don't remember ever actually using one, though.

In the movie "War Games", there was an 8inch floppy drive on a shelf, and a credit card on the computer. Home boy was phone phreaking. I don't think that's a thing any more.

I had a tour of an AWACs aircraft several years ago and they were still running on Windows 3.1, which is what worked for the other systems on board the aircraft. I read that in the last few years they've upgraded to the latest version, but there are a lot of legacy systems still out there. All of the movies that show razor thin translucent screens, VR gear, and ultra high end platforms on every ship and aircraft are way off base.

In 25+ years in DoD, I never saw a briefing room as spiffy and up to date as one of the more prestigious lecture halls at Kansas State University, c. 1977. (For staff & fac, you understand, not mere students. Heaven knows what the administrators at KSU have now.) A lot of them were not up to the level of a good high school auditorium. I certainly wouldn't use a real one in a movie. It wouldn't look credible.

But anyone worried that the Defense Department doesn't have the most recent version of Windows or the computers to run it in some stations should send along a little extra money in the check to the IRS this April, and make a note as to what the extra cash is to be used for.

I had a huge box of 8" floppies. They made nifty ninja throwing squares (not too accurate, but dangerous when zipping about.) Tossed them into the trash (but kept a smaller box of them for use with my C64's that still work… ;-)

While SACCS is reliable, it is obviously expensive and difficult to maintain when it fails. There are no replacement parts available, so all components must be repaired—a task that may require hours manipulating parts under a microscope.

Sounds kind of like the 40K universe.
