Another game of the recently released War by Sail rules, this time the Spanish Armada – 1588

Start of the game – using generic ship lists rather than individual named ships. The game will provide lists for both generic and named vessels.
English (in the blue): 2 Small Race-Built galleons,1 medium Race-built galleon, and 1 large race-built galleon.
Spanish (red bases) 2x large galleons, 1x medium galleon, 1x large carrack, 1x medium carrack

first contact – small English race-built galleon swoops past the Spanish bows

things start heating up

close action, casualties being inflicted on the large carrack. Large race-built galleon is giving it some raking fire in this image

large and small race-built galleon gang up on a large galleon, killing many of the crew – its still fighting though!

The English medium race-built galleon is eventually dismasted while fighting off 2 Spanish ships. It manages to get its heavy stern chasers off at close range though, inflicting some damage

the action towards the end of the game

the small English race-built galleon eventually manages to tip the Spanish ship over the edge of crew casualties, taking it into "heavy casualties", reducing its fighting power significantly. Its taken 2 ships the entire game to get to this stage though.

by the end of the game 2 English ships were in "heavy casualties", 1 English ship was dismasted, while 1 Spanish ship was in "heavy casualties", and one of the carracks was dismasted.

No ships were sunk (very realistic), and none surrendered (also fairly realistic). Seemed pretty balanced and taught me that you really have to focus fire in this game – you can't just go 1-to-1 and expect results, you need 2-to-1 or more to really sink a ship (or at least put it out of action) in this period, although there were no fires or explosions this particular game, so that may have changed things…

One question about the rules, just to clarify.
When firing do you roll dice to hit (and damage) for each gun in broadside, or just for each type of guns.
FX: standard 74-gunner (13*32pdr, 14*18pdr, 7*9pdr) should roll 13 dices for lower deck, 14 dices for upper deck and 7 dices for quarterdeck (total 34 dices), or just 1 dice for each deck, then multiplying it for number of guns to get damage points?

Roll 1 dice for each individual gun, starting with 1 type, then going on to the next.
So roll to hit with all 13 of the 32-pdr, then roll to inflict damage with all the 32-pdrs that hit. Then move on to the next gun type, tallying up damage points as you go.
The example game on YouTube shows how this is done 😀
