I started with Napoleincs, and while I've done lots of periods, my main stuff is 18th and early 19th Century. That means you always paint something black, shoes, cartridge box, shako/bicorne/tricorne etc. But in other periods you don't have that, my Vikings, don't have black felt or black leather. My HYW troops doesn't either. And I always find it strange, seeing a unit with no black on it. Do you? |

Well, I've never thought about it until now but yeah, you have a point. |

My Teutonic Order troops have lots of black on them and they predate the HYW by a bit. |

No. Plenty of troops who have something black. Plenty of troops who don't. |

Black Brunswickers? Though mine are largely dark grey. I know what you mean, Gunny. From time to time you get a unit that doesn't use a stand by colour. Often it's something like red, for me. And if you really miss using black, why not push the boundaries and create a slightly dubious personage like "Eric the Black" (Eric the Red's Gothic cousin)? Or "Harald Blacktooth" who is into building networks of like-minded psychopaths? |

My goth Vikings have loads of black on them. (What do you mean, wrong kind of goths…?) |

The Celtiberians currently on my painting desk will have plenty of black …. |

…. and my least favourite bit of painting is trying to find a different colour for all the shoes or boots …. (in pairs of course) |

Have never thought about it, but it does not matter to me. |

Not strange. If it's got black, It's got black. If it don't got black, it don't got black. Similar to Dagwood, I find black to be the hardest colour for varying colour, especially since I use flat black bases. Right now I have a great "charcoal" colour of black that has good contrast (when dry) with regular black-black. In comparison, I have a metric butt-ton of different browns and find them easy to mix for varied shades of boots, straps, wood, etc within a unit. |

I base coat or do a wash of black very often … |

Only having Napoleonic armies if I had to paint any other era they would get a black hat, boots, sword sheath, probably back pack. I do think the Brunswick army is my next project. |

If the figures are carrying a gun, they've got something black. The only figures I have who don't necessarily have any black, are Ancients, but even then there are helmet feathers, shield designs and a lot of them have dark hair…. |
