Real Life has prevented me from attending to my tumbling dice 1/2400 samples, but it looks like Real Life might obligingly suspend itself for a while.

Is there an idiot's guide to Napoleonic ships (pictures essential)? Is there a source listing Napoleonic fleet composition for all European countries?

My ultimate goal is a solo land and sea campaign, involving hopefully not just the usual protagonists.

Many thanks LPWC

On your second question, Navies of the Napoleonic by Otto von Pivka is an oldie but a goodie and a decent second-hand copy is currently available on Amazon.com for less than $10. USD or Amazon.co.uk for about GBP12. Nothing on their Australian site.

There are a couple of copies available on Abe Books, but I didn't do any cost comparison with the Amazon offer to see if they are a better deal. I own this book and I think it's just what you're looking for, with full orbats.

Some great resources are the sellers sites. GHQ:

Also Rod Langton's site is a treasure trove.
If you are doing solo, there can be no 'incorrect' paint scheme…

22nd Foot suggestion is a good one, and a used at that price is what you are looking for.

This site is a good resource threedecks.org for all sorts of things, including fleet composition.

For an idiot's guide Patrick O'Brian's "Master and Commander" (the first in a brilliant series of novels) has the boatswain explaining in layman's terms how the ship works to Dr. Maturin (a landsman) – although there is only one picture at the front of the book showing the names of the sails etc).

Thanks very much for those suggestions. I have picked up a copy of Navies of the Napoleonic Era from Abe Books, cheap but shipping to Oz always inflates things… Will see if I can snag a copy of M&C.

d88mm1940 you are dead right! But the tumbling dice models are so nice (to me at least) that I want to try and do them justice.

If you want information about Napoleonic ships, I add a link to a very useful Spanish page. link

At the bottom of the page you have a list of the ships of the main maritime nations. Hope this can help you. Regards.

A tip for getting those Nelson chequers in 1/2400. Try just painting the hull black then printing out a correctly scaled side view of a ship and sticking it on the sides.

Great tip BillyNM. I saw an example of that on the James White Gallery blog, and for any one else that wants to see the result (and a truly inspiring blog) here is the link: link
BillyNM do you do this yourself, and if so what sources do you use?
