I belong to a number of Yahoo Groups and this morning got a lot of messages to inform me that: "Yahoo has made the decision to no longer allow users to upload content to the Yahoo Groups site. Beginning October 21, you won't be able to upload any more content to the site, and as of December 14 all previously posted content on the site will be permanently removed. You'll have until that date to save anything you've uploaded." More details can be found at au.help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN31010.html?impressions=true . Although I rarely post messages in any of my Yahoo Groups, I find it useful for it's files and sometimes interesting commentary on issues related to wargaming. It was particularly useful when researching wargame rules for detailed information and discussion on their operation as the files often contained scenarios and up-to-date errata. [For example, I recently enquired here on TMP about ACW rules and was alerted by TMP members to a several wargame rules including 'Bloody Big Battles' that had a Yahoo Group that were useful to me.] I also felt that being a member of Yahoo Groups I played a small part in fighting the dominance of internet behemoths like Facebook (I don't belong to it) and Google (I mostly use DuckDuckGo instead). The intended changes to Yahoo Groups will make it largely useless to me and judging by comments posted in them, to many others. However, in its death throes I noted that one post alerted me to a similar system, IO Groups, which I found at groups.io so I'll search it later for wargaming interests. |

It was not clear to me from the message I received (I'm an admin for two Groups) that just e-mails will not continue. But, just in case, I'm preparing alternatives… Locally, we have 2 or 3 alternatives for file and photo sharing already in place. |

As far as I can gather, it is just the e-mail contacts that WILL continue, all the rest will go. Effectively it is being deleted for all practical purposes. |

Yahoo has been losing money on – and trying to kill off – Groups for years…. |

"Yahoo has been losing money on – and trying to kill off – Groups for years…." Yes, and this will be the death blow. The groups are useless once you remove: Files; Polls; Links; Photos; Folders; Calendar; Database; Attachments; Conversations; Email Updates; Message Digest; and Message History. |

Our local gaming club switched to IO systems and it is working very well. |
