I was surprised to hear someone recently say – apparently quite seriously – that he routinely uses his brush water as a wash on his figures.

On a scale of 0 (pure) to 10 (black as sin), how clean is your brush water right now?

nnascati Supporting Member of TMP14 Oct 2019 6:13 p.m. PST

Probably a 5. I usually change it between projects.

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP14 Oct 2019 6:34 p.m. PST

Right now?

0 – Pure

I just finished painting and gluing some stuff, so I don't have brushwater right now. Generally, I work for a couple hours with water in a juice bottle cap, then I dump it out at the end.

Ragbones14 Oct 2019 6:38 p.m. PST

0. I change it frequently. Certainly after each painting session, sometimes during a session.

khanscom14 Oct 2019 7:33 p.m. PST

It's sort of Panzer Grey-- what # would that be?

Personal logo Saber6 Supporting Member of TMP Fezian14 Oct 2019 8:07 p.m. PST

"It's wet"

jwebster Supporting Member of TMP14 Oct 2019 8:58 p.m. PST

I have two cups, wash in dirtyt one first, then clean one. When clean one gets to a 9 on your scale, change them both

Right now, about a three? I will change it out before I paint again, which will probably be no sooner than Thursday.

Glengarry514 Oct 2019 10:42 p.m. PST

Since I just changed the water it's clear… when I can't see the bottom I think about changing the water.

Dry with a little residue at the bottom haven't painted in over a month

I use fresh water.

ZULUPAUL Supporting Member of TMP15 Oct 2019 3:53 a.m. PST

Mine is grey also. I change it every 2-4 sessions.

whitphoto15 Oct 2019 5:21 a.m. PST

Tastes fine

ChrisS194415 Oct 2019 6:10 a.m. PST

I change it at least once every years…..

79thPA Supporting Member of TMP15 Oct 2019 6:15 a.m. PST

I change it every session; sometimes multiple times per session.

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP15 Oct 2019 6:56 a.m. PST

About a 2

I change it every few months

Thomas O15 Oct 2019 7:21 a.m. PST

I change it when it gets to about a 6. Or between projects which ever comes first. Normally I redo my wet pallet at the same time.

0-5 … then change as needed …

Personal logo Old Contemptible Supporting Member of TMP15 Oct 2019 8:12 a.m. PST

0-3 Change as necessary. Not cleaning any part of my body with it.

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP15 Oct 2019 9:43 a.m. PST

I fill my bowl with fresh water every time I start painting, and pour it out when I finish. So during painting, my water goes from 0 to maybe 3.

dampfpanzerwagon Fezian15 Oct 2019 10:29 a.m. PST

Usually 5 – but it can go as high as 9.

Sorry.

Currently 4 but I never let it ge past 6 or so.

I put in a drop or three of antibacterial soap when I draw it.

Dagwood15 Oct 2019 12:21 p.m. PST

The water is clean and fresh but the bottom of the jar is rather dirty, it only gets a rough clean every so often. I did once use the dirty stuff to paint a horse; I had seen a real horse of a similar colour, a slightly greenish grey.

Personal logo Stosstruppen Supporting Member of TMP15 Oct 2019 2:14 p.m. PST

I change it once most of it has evaporated

huron725 Supporting Member of TMP15 Oct 2019 2:14 p.m. PST

7 maybe 8, grayish hue. Not too picky about clean water as I like the dirty look on the miniatures anyway.

Personal logo The Nigerian Lead Minister Supporting Member of TMP15 Oct 2019 3:26 p.m. PST

About a 6. Once half evaporates I change it, not based on color.

Yesthatphil15 Oct 2019 5:38 p.m. PST

I tend to refresh mine when it gets knocked over …

Phil

manyslayer15 Oct 2019 5:44 p.m. PST

Clean enough to drink. Yes, I do speak from (repeated) experience.

Personal logo Doctor X Supporting Member of TMP15 Oct 2019 9:48 p.m. PST

You wouldn't drink it or eat any fish from it.

evilgong15 Oct 2019 10:41 p.m. PST

One a 0 and one at 3

advocate16 Oct 2019 2:13 a.m. PST

5. I might have just replaced it, or I might have undercoated some figures in black.

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP16 Oct 2019 6:55 a.m. PST

8 grey with a redish hint.

farnox16 Oct 2019 12:39 p.m. PST

About a 5, as with others I'll change it when the glass gets low.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART16 Oct 2019 1:06 p.m. PST

In water colors you always use a large and CLEAN container.

14Bore16 Oct 2019 1:58 p.m. PST

I probably go a few weeks even when I'm painting daily. But since I haven't been painting all summer it's a few months

custosarmorum Supporting Member of TMP16 Oct 2019 5:06 p.m. PST

Definitely 0 -- I use a Masterson Rinse Well and really like it. I press a button and it empties the well and replaces it with clean water from a 28 oz reservoir.

Great after using metallic paints although I also change after a major change in paint color.

Syrinx016 Oct 2019 6:07 p.m. PST

As Stosstruppen said, every time it evaporates. For those rare occasions when I am painting frequently, I try not to let it get past a 5.

von Schwartz16 Oct 2019 6:34 p.m. PST

11, and yes, I do use it as a wash, and it also makes a fine mix with bourbon.

Zephyr117 Oct 2019 2:17 p.m. PST

For those who mistakenly used their cup of coffee/tea to clean their brush, it's most likely 10… evil grin
