It's been more than a decade since the last time I painted a commercial hard-foam building. Back then it was a big Hudson & Allen castle. I think after I was done I sealed it with Testor's dullcote or Krylon matte finish, without inflicting any damage to the structure, but my age-addled memory is not certain. This new miniature terrain is a 13-piece Vauban fortress from Magister Militum. Most of the pieces were cast in a hard foam that seems very similar to Hudson & Allen buildings, and a few are brand new and were cast in resin or ceramic. I'm not worried about those, but I'm hesitant to spray-seal the foam pieces unless or until I get some more info on the results. I spent about 2 months painting them and don't want to see any of them dissolve away in the final step! Any and all info will be very much appreciated! |

Safe to spray. 👍🏼 Could test on an edge if unsure. |

Probably not, unless the paint you use acts as a protective barrier. From what I've read, most spray sealants corrode foam. Perhaps, if you can use an acrylic sealant, like Future Floor Wax, or other similar products. As mentioned, best to test on a small, inexpensive piece, first. |

You can absolutely use a spray sealer on the Magister Militum hard foam models. They are cast in polyurethane foam. Only polystyrene foam(Depron, Styrofoam, XPS, blue foam and all it's other customary and trade names) will melt. |

I saw someone online spray paint the foam that does corrode and he managed not to corrode any of it. It seems that it is the propellant that causes the corroding and if you spray from just far enough back it is safe. I wouldn't try it myself though… YouTube link |

Thanks to everyone for all the replies! My recent personal experience confirms what TheOtherOneFromTableScape says above: it was safe to use spray sealer on the old school Magister Militum hard foam terrain pieces. As seen here in front of some pretty Age of Enlightenment clouds, the Vauban survived intact:
