I've trawled through a number of period illustrations online to try to determine the uniform worn by Bernadotte in the Campaign of 1813, when, of course,he lead the Swedish army. Some indicate he wore what looks very much like his French marshal's uniform with Swedish decorations & sash. Others seem to show a slightly more Swedish style. I'm aware that studio paintings may sacrifice truth for the PR message so I'm not really certain what he wore in the field. The reason I ask is I'm building a late war Swedish army & would like a figure representing the Crown Prince to lead it. As the ranges I patronise do not have a named Bernadotte, I'm wondering if a generic Swedish general or a slightly altered French marshal would be better? Some indication of horse furniture would also be helpful. |

1/72 & 20mm. The only scale I ever use. |

Thanks for that. The images again seem a mixture of French & (I assume) Swedish. It's no big thing, but I'm still not sure what he actually wore in the field. I may go with French marshal + Swedish sash with a Swedish general's shabraque. This will, I think, reflect the conflicted nature of the man. |

IIRC when I painted him up many years ago he wore a purple uniform. Although I had a reference for it I can't recall where I saw it. Probably either the Osprey on Scandinavian armies or the original Rawkins book. Of course he probably had several changes of clothing anyway. |

he wore a purple uniform. Something he stole from Murat's wardrobe? |

Personally I would go with the depiction of him at Dennewitz: link |

I hadn't seen this painting before: thank you. Looks like in a Swedish general's overcoat with sash and Swedish style shabraque. Yes, I think this might be the way to go. |

thanks for the link and painting, but how reliable is Vetterling, certainly unreliable for the Prussians, the square should be half open or closed and not Landwehr colours were carried into battle. Contemporary prints showing Karl in a very similiar uniform as a French Marshal (differences of course in the lace work) and he is wearing a blue order sash/band instead of the red of the legion d'honneur. see link |

Well you've come into the discussion late, H-K, but you have summarised the issue. |
