For a local friend … are these houses only in mountainous areas? … or also in valleys and coastal areas?…
Thanks in advance for your guidance.

They're definitely rural houses, rich-folk homes in the cities would have tile roofs. |

They appear to be based on the gassho-zukuri style, which strictly speaking puts them around Gifu prefecture in the Edo period. But no-one's really going to quibble. You could always cover the roof with wooden shingles if you wanted to get rid of the thatching and you don't mind the extra work. Or thatch them with a towel and add a ridgepole for a different style. But the basic shape of the houses are fine. |

Many thanks!. The problem is that my friend is a "purist" of the wargames … and wants to make a zombie game in Japan … but in the mountainous area … and wants houses of that style … if there is a "Mountainous" style of Japanese houses … (smile) Amicalement Armand |

If he's a ‘purist' then tell him there are no zombies in Japan. :-) |

Yeah, most mountains in Japan gets a lot of snow, as in up to several meters of snow. That's why you see the heavily slanted roofs even more than in the plains. |
