"Does the Civil War still matter to America in 2019? That's the question Civil War Times asks in its latest issue, hitting mailboxes this week. Emerging Civil War is pleased to partner with Civil War Times to extend the conversation beyond the magazine and into the blogosphere. Beginning next week, ECW's historians will tackle the question posed by the cover story of the December 2019 issue of Civil War Times: "Do we still care? The Civil War in a Changing America."…" Main page link Amicalement Armand |

Somebody should have explained to these ill-educated people that ECW already refers to a different civil war and that maybe picking some other name for themselves make them appear less ignorant! |

I think in this context ECW stands for the focus group "Emerging Civil War." |

Cerdic- The acronyms we all use as wargamers are unknown outside our hobby. |

I'd think that most Americans don't really care about the English Civil War (ECW)… |

Yeah, I did work out the 'Emerging Civil War' bit. Although what something that finished 150-odd years ago is emerging from is another question! Sounds like pseudo-academic bollox to me. ECW? Common abbreviation or weird wargamer speak? Discuss… I'm not expecting Americans to care about the English Civil War. I don't care about the Spanish Civil War but I know that it happened. The point is about engaging with the big wide world and not living in your own little bubble like a contestant on Love Island… |

Cerdic, I find the English Civil War fascinating and of great significance. That said, over the last few years when I have covered the subject in class, a number of my students from the UK claimed that they were totally unfamiliar with the English Civil War. All of them, however, knew quiet a bit concerning the American Civil War. While it is nice that students know something about the American Civil War, British and American young people should also learn more concerning the English Civil War as well. |

Kevin C, Yes, you are quite right. I would be pretty confident that more people in Britain have heard of the American Civil War than the English version! Given our current constitutional shenanigans a bit more knowledge wouldn't go amiss. |

How many of your population still have ties with ancestors linked to that ACW and LOL to the Ecw? 30-40% dwindling no? |
ScottWashburn | 12 Oct 2019 5:37 a.m. PST |
I have several ancestors who fought in the ACW. But I also have a link to the ECW. I'm descended from a John Washburn who came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1631. But his brother remained in England and was on the losing side in the ECW. I don't know if he actually fought, or just backed the wrong side. He was forced to flee to Ireland and then eventually to America where he rejoined his brother. |

I have one know ACW ancestor, G-G-Grampa Sauer came off the boat and enlisted. when that enlistment expired he went home and enlisted in a different regiment but as a musician. The ECW well perhaps someone from the Scott side of the family but, little is known other than where he left Scotland from. |

Funny thing but ECW and ACW are not anacronyms, because they are not pronounced as words but as their individual letters. They are initialisms, as is CIA, UXB or FBI. SHAEF or ARVN or NASA are true acronyms, as you will find the moment you try to say the letters out loud. I, in the last few days, have had to review a surgical paper talking about an IED. This in our trade (well in the US anyway) has suddenly become an Inner Ear Dehiscence unknown to me. I have begged the editors to drop this….it is an initialism. |

I'm not sure I would want an Improvised Explosive Device in my ear… |

Tell me about it… I cannot believe that my US colleagues have accepted this as…well acceptable I guess, I have seen too many UK military who have returned, who know only too well what an IED can do to your hearing, let alone your number of limbs. |
