It appears to be in the correct period, and they're claiming that it's closely based on the Wells novel. The look is certainly there, so we'll see!

The article writes in future tense, but the first episode was last Sunday….

It's not yet been shown on the terrestrial BBC1 channel – still ‘in the autumn'.

If it has been shown elsewhere, I've not yet heard anything about it.

Of course, there have been some negative comments about the use of 1904-inappropriate Gatling guns in the trailer!

They probably used them because they are more 'sexy' action-wise than Maxims. At least they didn't use Puckle guns… ;-)

Looks worth watching, especially Ms. Tomlinson.

I think it's been set during the Edwardian rather than Victorian era. All the soldiers appear to be in Khaki.

I shall certainly keep an eye out for that, although the Gatling looks a little anachronistic.

Basha Felika11 Oct 2019 10:31 a.m. PST

It's actually correct to set it in Edwardian England, with the troops in khaki: though written in 1894 (IIRC), it is set in ‘in the early years of the 20th century' and the regulations changed in 1904, shortly after the 2nd Boer War.

And who's to say there wasn't a Gatling in the back room of the local Territorial Battalion drill hall that was dusted off for the emergency? 🙂

It's also an ITV production, nit Auntie Beeb entirely.

If this is being done by todays BBC I will past on it.

Sorry to report, it was bl&#dy awful, a real disappointment.

Basha: Yours was hardly a unique opinion, but I have seen some finding it worth the watch.

Hope I get the chance; I've been known to actually like 'bl&#dy awful.' Just ask my friends. ;->=

Always interested in alternative viewpoints, Doug. I reread the original novel while watching the series, which only underlined just how good it could have been had they focused on the themes and storyline contained therein – it's a very tightly written story – rather than try to add layers of 21st century angst to the (correct) Edwardian setting.
