Our little group's project for 2020 will be the ACW. We aim to work towards a Show game of Chancellorsville in late August. The rules will be 'Pickett's Charge' – we've had one game & like them. As you know, a primary feature is the order mechanism. To represent a commander's ability to give orders, you need a selection of ADC figures. These will be, I guess, single mounted figures of officers? Is there any special information I need to paint such figures for the Union or Rebel sides? I know, for example, French Napoleonic ADCs wore brassards. Nothing special on an ACW ADC? |

As far as I know they wore a standard officer's uniform. The number of ADCs a general was permitted to have was based on his rank. For example, a Brigadier General was permitted one ADC. |

Same same on no special uniform. Perhaps ADC is not really what you're asking about. Any general could use any staff officer to carry orders to any units under his command. I would suggest the quality of the general should dictate how many orders he can give (that may already be covered in the rules). |

Most generals (at least above brigade level) also had a few cavalrymen around who could also serve as messengers. |

Yes, I was wondering if you mean ADCs, or couriers, or staff officers? |

Note, however, that officers bought their own uniforms and were given a little leeway to spruce them up if they wanted (and had the money). I doubt that many veered far enough away to be noticeable in a miniature figurine, but who knows? |

P''s C calls them ADCs.They may well be classified as couriers or staff officers. And thanks for the information: an assortment of mounted officers & cavalrymen. |

Given that the rules make ADCs "responsible" for a number of things we went with the Officer look as it was more in keeping with the often delegated tasks that ADCs undertook. Yes, they could be glorified messengers, but they were expected to be a General's eyes and ears too and quite often had authority advise on intentions and assist in the direction of troops. |
