My first tumbling dice 1/2400 have arrived. I was drawn to them by J White's Gallery extraordinary renditions of these models: link If I can get a model to look half as good I will be happy. Anyway my reason for trying this scale was that it made gaming naval actions more feasible. What mats do you use for 1/2400? In fact, what playing surfaces do you use? Cheers LPWC |

Deep Cut Studio's mousepad (neoprene) mats are great, they do a Waterworld one that is excellent or you can get a custom print. link |

I've been looking at the F.A.T. mousepad mats from Tablewars ( link ) . I like how the picture looks, but I haven't really heard much about how they look in person. |

Excellent suggestions thanks! NKL Aero Tom and Daveshoe I have looked at these mats and they are nicely done. My question is whether they will look ok with 1/2400 ships. It's really a question about whether the way the sea is depicted, size of waves & crests is convincing or whether the sea will look too large & significantly out of scale. 1/2400 are pretty small (but not the smallest!) Saber6 that is a superb idea. The natural texture would give a lot of variation. If I get fussy I saw a video of someone sponging & dabbing different sea greens onto a blue board to give variety. Could work on leather. |

I have Deep Cut water mat and had them alter the color a little lighter for Caribbean. Liked it, and doing it double sided I have a desert mat on the back for Tunisia Chain of Command. |

I have a Deep Cut mat with the Waterworld image (and 3" hexes) and I love it. It's a very sunny-day blue, no real hint of green or gray or brown water, but it's beautful and will work for pretty much any scale. I made myself a set of 2' foam mats using these instructions by War Artisan. They look like this in action:
More pictures here: link These have been by far the most useful naval wargaming accessory I've ever made. There is no edge of the world, I can scroll the sea as far as needed to keep the action centered on the table. - Ix |

I use dark blue marine vinyl (what the guys above refer to as blue leather from the fabric store). |

Cossacks, I'm very glad you liked the look of the models. For what it's worth, I bought a digital file from WargamePrint for $8.50 USD, and then sent the file off to a shop specializing in vinyl banner printing. That has the benefit of potentially being done locally, depending on your local resources. This is the one I used: link They offer a variety of colors of the same graphic. To my eye the scaling of the waves looks great for either 1/1200 or 1/2400. James |

Yellow Admiral the mats are outstandingly good. Read Jeff's tutorial; I should have thought of him as I have followed his 10mm Napoleonic escapades with interest and made a game mat following another tutorial (and Jeff's helpful responses to my frequent questions). whitejamest thanks for that link – the idea of local banner printing (which we even have here in Sydney!) raises a whole series of possibilities and I will re-think the project. Will check your blog for pictures of the mat. Cheers LPWC |
