Hi! This is my first attempt at painting American Civil War Soldiers, North and South troops. I have very little knowledge in this conflict, so your comments about accuracy are welcome :) I tried to represent several regiments (as test shots), so it's not the beginning of a single regiment in particular. And it took me 2 or 3 attempts before I'm happy with the light blue trousers.

Good to see an Airfix stalwart amongst their numbers! |

Is the airfix figure the kneeling firing confederate or the one clubbing his rifle? |

The one with the squarer base on the Confederate right. The clubbed rifle/musket guy looks suspiciously like a Union figure from the Esci set… Nice paint job. |

It's the Confederate figure with the square base (beside the kneeling/firing figure). |

Thank you for your comments. Yes, the Airfix soldier is the one with a square base. He comes from the Union set and has been painted grey. Note the small bayonet added to his rifle.

Nicely done! The variation among the Rebs looks great You did a good job on the light blue pants – they can be a little hard to get right but your shade looks bang on |

Red kepis/forage hats and facings are for artillerymen, blue for infantry, yellow for cavalry. And isn't there a consensus now that that blue trousers for Confederates were rare after '61. A few years ago I distinctly remember thinking, "well, I screwed that up for years." |

Thanks for the feedback! Regarding the two soldiers with red facings, I wanted to represent men from the Charleston Zouave Cadets – my source is a painted unit I saw a long time ago in the first issue of a french magazine, Vae Victis. Maybe it's a parade uniform ? And regarding the trousers, yes, now that I'm looking for reenactors pictures, I can see what you think about them. |

While both of Flashman's points are substantially correct, there is a period of the war where "anything goes" is more or less correct for the CSA. This would be early- to mid-1862, when the Confederate depots were not yet up to the task of furnishing uniform clothing, and the Rebel troops wore a motley combination of the ragged remnants of pre-war militia uniforms (many individual infantry companies and regiments had red facings), civilian homespun, and ex-Federal items captured from supply dumps or looted from the battlefield. So I would totally accept Philotep's diorama as a scene from the Peninsula or Shiloh! |

You've done a cracking job my friend 👍 |

good job. Remember you DO NOT Need a ton of figures on a massive table anymore. 4x4 table with 2.5 inch hexagons is perfect, with rules that have one unit representing one regiment, 15-20 units per side including cavalry and artillery is all you need, and 6-8 figures per unit for infantry and 2-3 for each cavalry squadron or you can call the squadron a battalion if you want. Good luck with your gaming and contact me for any acw help at imagineimage.org |

I had red-kepid Charleston Zouves – if you only had the Blandford book to go on that was a good way of breaking up a sea of grey! |
