With regard to the hobby, is there anything you do which is different from the way most other gamers do things? For example, I know a lot of gamers prefer to assemble the model and then paint, but I am squarely in the paint-then-assemble school. So much easier to paint that way… |

I'm paranoid about getting a good bond with glue. I pin things a lot, and always wash minis with detergent before assembling and priming. Consequently, I almost never assemble after painting. Of course, very large and/or complex models usually necessitate it. If a nook's too hard to get to, it's too easy to slop some dark brown (or similarly dark color most fitting to the overall palette of the mini) behind shields and such. If it's hard to reach with a brush, it will be in shadow, anyway. |

All the Napoleonic players who paint their French line infantry in bright blue, please step forward. Hehe Seriously though, my ECW musketeer sleeves will be half as deep as the pikes in the center. Sue me. Haven't done it yet, but I'm going to paint Woodland Scenic pine tree armatures as leafless, winter time white birches. |

I glue miniatures to the bases and add the ground cover material… and then I prime and paint. no miniatures on popsicle sticks for me. : ) |

Is there anything you do which is different from the way most other gamers do things? I tend to get an inspired idea to assemble and paint an army using multiple manufacturers and when I'm done I'll go find a set of rules to use them for. |

Mostly the same as Night Owl III for me. Figures first – rules second – more figures as needed by the rules – gaming maybe. |

I don't believe that 'different' is necessarily 'wrong'. Do what works for you. |

Flashman: Lemax does bare branch winter trees (birches and sycamores) for their Christmas villages. They used to have sets of half a dozen or more trees, and in the after season sales you could get them dirt cheap-I have a couple of dozen I got for a buck or so a tree. So you might look around and find what you want cheap and prepainted. I'm with the Beast on gluing. I hate having to reglue minis and always do whatever is necessary to ensure I never have glue joints fail. |

How about a fairly massive Napoleonic armies and not 1 Frenchman in the lot, even I occasionally wonder if that's wrong. |

I tend to start projects, collect figures then only paint some of them and never play the game they were intended for. |

I knew a guy that painted figures after they were based. Like three or four to a Empire size infantry base. His figures looked pretty good. Damn if I know how he did it. |

I have a habit of painting most or all of one figure before I move on to the next. I start out painting all the shoes and then all flesh etc. Sometimes I get in a groove with one figure and before I know it, I painted the whole figure in one go. |

I build armies the way I like, then look around for a suitable set of rules. I don't check to see what edition is current. I don't buy anything which can only be played with custom dice from the makers of the rules. I don't buy anything which requires a rule book plus an army book, and I never check to see what the Flames of War people want me to buy this month. Sometimes I have no point system. Judging from the hobby shops, I must represent less than 5% of wargamers. |

Not "wrong", but for Napoleonics, I'm attracted to the "odd" units – Regiments provisoires croates, Mansfelder Pionier Battalion, Hanseatische Legion, Regimento Reale Dalmata, and Regiment Illyrien, just to name a few. Not to mention all of Pepe Bottela's regiments, a fair number of Spanish units for the other side, Russian opolchenya, Ottomans, and HEICo sepoys. Then there's my "joke" unit. The Zurich Junior Bankers Battalion, made up of Brigade Games garden gnomes. |

I do lots of wrong things. I even prefer single rank basing on very thin bases which should probably see me banned for life from the hobby. I always adapt rules. I like rolling terrain not flat geometric terrain systems and so the list goes on. |
Old Glory | 30 Sep 2019 4:53 p.m. PST |
I make my units the size I see fit and my bases the same. Do not give much of a hoot about ground scales, move distances, firing distances, etc. as long as "it feels right." Used the same rules (heavily modified) for over 37 years and see no point what so ever in changing. Regards Russ Dunaway |

On occasion, my NWF Pathans have been reinforced by modern Taliban. It's a telling sign, either of my mad painting skillz or of the eyesight of my gaming mates, how seldom anyone notices that the 1880-era Pathans are armed with AK-47 or RPG-7. |

I must be very "wrong" I hate painting, try NEVER to buy kits as I hate building and worst of all I spend almost all my time playing or scenario writing. |

I usually play home brew rules. I also paints big armies. I don't get games where an army is 20 figures in 5 units. My undead, orcs, elves, dwarves, etc probably have 200-300 figures each. |

Jeffers | 01 Oct 2019 11:22 a.m. PST |
Buy stuff, paint it, stick it in the loft, repeat. Bet I'm not alone. I collect stuff and organise it to look how I want rather than conform to a set of rules. Not alone it seems… I don't give a monkey's about ground scale and use what looks right. Not alone there… I find gaming the most unenjoyable part of the hobby. Probably…. And from another thread I'm not that unusual in hating people either, so I'm probably mainstream! |

paint just for fun these days, don't even try to game. Yeah, sounds a lot like me, though I do try to get one or two games. Gonna hafta go to solo gaming. Wrong ? Everything ! Just ask SWMBO…oh, in gaming ! If a tree falls in the forest, is it the fault of the man? |

Flat black bases for figures. I like 'em. They are like shadows and event horizons (they delimit the possible space the figure could be occupying during the current time slice). People who do other types of base are not "wrong", but I don't like my troops to have that take a little tuft of crass with them on the dirt road, dirt into the water, snow on to the pebble beach, or that little bit of ship planks that are facing the wrong way … |
