My questions are about Egyptian armies of the 6-4th century BC and their battle arrays.

How were formed bowmen were deployed along the battle line?
Were bows attached in small bodies (of 500) in the invervals between the infantry (spearmen) formations?
Were they paced behind the infantry ?

At this late period, there seems to be very little evidence for bowmen at all. The Greek writers only talk about swordsmen and spearmen with big shields, for instance. It seems likely that bowmen were not as important as in earlier periods, and we don't really know how they were used. We don't even know if the archers who shot King Josiah, for instance, were infantry at all.

Thanks Duncan,

I`m thinking of playing and testing my rules using Pelusium as a basis. I would think that Persian troops of the period would have done well against Psamtik`s army if it only had bow skirmishers. Shooting more arrows at the Egyptians may have given Cambyses an advantage, rather than the psychological cruelty throwing cats at them?
