Analsim | 27 Sep 2019 1:20 p.m. PST |
Hello Everyone, I don't frequent TMP on a regular basis, but after seeing the results of the recent 'Age Survey', I see that I fit right in with the rest of the old people here. ;^) Regardless, seeing all YOUR interesting TMP nicknames (i.e. monikers) I was curious to know how and/or why you chose them. My own dates back to the mid-90s, when these message board websites started appearing. Originally, I was "Simanal" which stood for 'Simulation & Analysis' the branch of the US Army Research organization that I worked for at the time. However, that name didn't last long, as a result of a comment made by an ex-Marine wargame friend of mine, who commented that "since I was so 'anal' about wargames and simulations, that my name should be the other way around." I agreed and changed it to "Analsim" and used it ever since. What's your story? |
David Manley | 27 Sep 2019 1:28 p.m. PST |
Found it on my birth certificate, it seemed to fit :) |
Parzival | 27 Sep 2019 2:06 p.m. PST |
Taken from the medieval romance Parzival by Wolfram Von Echenbach, which I studied in college during a course on King Arthur. I identified with the character of the protagonist, and used the name as my screen name when I enrolled with the original, pre-web AOL. (I am, as far as I know, the first person to use the name on the Internet, though it's possible it appeared in local BBs somewhere along the way.) In any case, I identify with the name as much as with my own birth name, having used it for nearly 30 years. Thus, I am Parzival, and Parzival is me. Accept no substitutes! As a side note, my icon is an original Grenadier Dungeons & Dragons Character miniature (the "ranger," I believe) given to me by a middle-school friend of mine back in 1978-79 upon my introduction to D&D. He did the original paint job, which I added to and touched up later, but essentially the paint job is from that time as well. It has the honor of being my first gaming miniature, in all its delightful clunky glory! |

No one really knows--or rather, different books on German surnames derive it quite differently. I think of the observation that "the man with one clock knows what time it is. The man with two is never quite sure." |
Stryderg | 27 Sep 2019 2:17 p.m. PST |
Stryder, of Lord of the Rings fame, was what I was shooting for. But it was already taken, so I added a G…for me. |
Patrick Sexton | 27 Sep 2019 2:26 p.m. PST |
I fall into the same category as David Manley. |

ColCampbell | 27 Sep 2019 2:40 p.m. PST |
Mine is from my very first painted wargame mounted commander – from the venerable Airfix Waterloo Highland box. Since Campbell is one of my family names, the mounted officer became Colonel Campbell and has led my Napoleonic British forces since the early 1970s. And yes, even though an Airfix plastic figure, he's still going strong.
Jim P.S. Picture was just taken for this thread. |

Old call sign (Virtual World) |
magical monstrous steve | 27 Sep 2019 2:43 p.m. PST |
I'm magical and monstrous. Actually, it came from when we used to play warhammer ancient battles and someone described it as warhammer fantasy without the magic and monsters. |

D A THB | 27 Sep 2019 2:55 p.m. PST |
Mine keeps evolving, it started out in early 2005 as Tallyhobiggles but I really wanted to use Biggleswade as Wade is my surname but someone else had it. We were playing a lot of Pulp in that era and everyone seemed to have silly names. I used it as my Yahoo email address on the old Flames of War Yahoo group but when that folded and went to a proper Forum I signed up as Dan. So my TMP name became Dan AKA Tallyhobiggles. I am also Dan on Lead Adventures. Then when I started my Blog and bored with my Moniker I shortened it to D A THB while I thought about a more suitable name. That was about three years ago so I have just stuck with my current Moniker. |

willthepiper | 27 Sep 2019 4:03 p.m. PST |
Short version: I'm a piper, and my name is Will. Longer version: my first SCA camping event. I spent much of the weekend entertaining all and sundry (whether they wanted the music or not…). At the closing court, Baron Sir Gerhard Kendal of Westmoreland summoned me to council. As I was new to the SCA, no one (or at least very few) knew who I was, so the bard called out, "Will the piper pray attend on their excellencies". And so, my SCA persona was born (or at least named). I've not been involved with the SCA for many, many years now, but I've kept the name anyway. |

The ACW unit of my grandfather's grandfather. My grandpa attended ACW reunions with his grandfather, which I thought was amazing. |
Redcurrant | 27 Sep 2019 4:34 p.m. PST |
I grow them in my garden – they are lovely in pies and crumbles. |
Herkybird | 27 Sep 2019 4:40 p.m. PST |
I called myself 'Herkybird' as all my other names were taken! I ended up choosing the nickname of my favourite Airfix plane kit, the C-130 Hercules! My picture is Wyall E Cayote, of Roadrunner fame, I always empathised with that character, I, too am doomed! |
95th Division | 27 Sep 2019 4:51 p.m. PST |
My Father was in the 95th Infantry Division, The Iron Men of Metz, in WW II. |
LaserGrenadier | 27 Sep 2019 5:10 p.m. PST |
Taken from my sci-fi wargame rules: LaserGrenadiers. Looking for a suitable military title back in the 1980's, I felt grenadiers were usually the premier troops in an army, so I added "laser" to make it futuristic, and combined the words in the German fashion as in Panzergrenadiers. |
Extrabio1947 | 27 Sep 2019 5:14 p.m. PST |
Extrabio1947 = Extraterrestrial Biological Entity, 1947. In other words, a Roswell Alien. Don't ask…. |
Crow Bait | 27 Sep 2019 5:55 p.m. PST |
I originally called myself Old Crow, after the Association of Old Crows. A Group of old SIGINT retirees. I thought somebody may confuse me with the miniature maker so I changed it to Crow Bait because my armies lose so often. |

von Schwartz | 27 Sep 2019 6:11 p.m. PST |
Simple, family name Schwartz. While researching uniforms for SYW Prussians I found that there was a Major K.A. von Schwartz who commanded the 35/36 Schenckendorff Grenadiers. Coincidence? I think not. |

Narratio | 27 Sep 2019 7:04 p.m. PST |
Came from an old Monty Python sketch about how to have an argument sparking my curiosity. How did you do that?. First step is to lay out the basic structure or narrative. So Narratio. I use it on everything and everywhere. |

Editor in Chief Bill | 27 Sep 2019 9:13 p.m. PST |
I was originally Editor Bill, as with my background in publishing, 'editor' seemed a better title for the guy who runs TMP than 'webmaster'. When TMP acquired staff editors, I promoted myself to Editor in Chief Bill. |

Giles the Zog | 28 Sep 2019 2:09 a.m. PST |
Given the nickname by university mates, as they claimed I was mostly on a different planet, and then the next day I found an article about all the lost change money that was attributed to an exchange deficit with the Planet Zog. used as my e-mail address, which has been described as a tough one by IT folks, and one that people will remember far more than my longer "grown up" e-mail address. |
Prince Alberts Revenge | 28 Sep 2019 3:18 a.m. PST |

altfritz | 28 Sep 2019 4:46 a.m. PST |
When the Internet came into being I was playing a lot of SYW and reading a lot of Duffy, Charles Grant, etc. Back then 8-and-3 was the rule: 8 character email names, file names, or whatever, followed by a 3 character extension. So my first email became: "altfritz@--- " and I've used it ever since. |
Lambert | 28 Sep 2019 5:06 a.m. PST |
It's the name of my cat, which I named after General Sir John Lambert. It's my favourite quote from the Waterloo film – "General Lambert needs reinforcements at Hougoumont", and Wellington's reply "I can only give General Lambert my best wishes". |
