If I look at the BMP platoon and the like, it has a Machine Gun and an RPG team. It got me thinking at what targets and for what reasons would an RPG WITH HE be better than say a Machyine gum. Clearly armored targets are an RPG only issue, but that would be HEAT. I was thinking of the Basic HE round available for many RPG's. |

I would think doing things like taking out bunkers, fortified positions, etc. Same sort of stuff you would want a grenade launcher for. Damon. |

HE for non-armored targets, e.g. Infantry, trucks, etc. However, AFAIK, the RPG is generally AT. |

Well, an MG is a suppression weapon. So to my mind completely different purposes for each. An HE round makes a small area go boom. So great for bunkers, buildings, soft vehicles. |

the russians developed a thermo baric round for use in afghanistan as they felt the he round was not very good for caves and bunkers. |

Yes, MGs are for suppressive fires, FPLs, etc. And are very effective against Infantry and light vehicles, including light AFVs, in some cases. E.g. a .50 cal will take out a BMP from the flank or rear. As well as, as I said HE is effective vs. Infantry, light vehicles, etc. … HE rounds generally have a blast/burst radius of some type even if very small. E.g. 60mm mortar vs. 81mm mortar, etc. |
