I recently read of a wargamer who uses something called "bird grit" (from the pet store) on his wargaming bases.

Do you use pet store materials in your wargaming?

Lots of good building options there, especially fantasy style things. I have gotten sand for bases from a pet store. Lots of interesting aquarium plants that can be used for jungles too.

The rocks and "cave formations" in the fish aisle are great! :)

Agree with the above. All sorts of stuff that can be used, especially for fantasy and SF games.

Chinchilla sand for bases.

Cat litter is good for rubble for fibua, just make sure it's unused

I sure do – Budgie grit, sand, cat litter, aquarium plants and accessories (including one of those bridges you are working on…)

Bird grit works well. Cat liter too.

Some plastic plants. Once in a while I see a cool looking building or bridge, but I have yet to buy one since it looks not quite in scale with my 28s.

Yup.

I've gotten terrain, rocks and plastic plants.

Bird grit is nice because it contains several different sizes of sand. Aquarium décor offers a lot of potential options, especially for ruins and classical architecture. I have even found a few nice fortifications. Matted grass and similar aquarium plants are also an easy way to do dense foliage, though hitting them with a spray of dullcote and a wash or drybrush or two helps them not look so plastic. Stepped rocks and caves (usually plastic or resin) also make very good terrain. In a similar vain, I found a nice small resin alligator skull piece that makes a great cave/hideout entrance for fantasy/pirate types.

I picked up a cool Greek temple for a HOTT stronghold. I usually like scatchbuilding but it was perfect….and cheap.

Heck yes!

I've used plastic vegetation for aquariums to create some jungly- looking terrain bits for a Vietnam skirmish game. I've always regretted not grabbing the Egyptian statues intended for terrariums-- last time I checked at Petco they were no longer stocked.
