The Peninsular War series of posts continues with a look at the pivotal fortress city of Badajoz, besieged four times in the war and with two battles fought within eighteen miles of the place, as the French and Allies disputed control.
Warning, this is a long post, but the subject matter, covering the four sieges accompanied by the many accounts left by those who were there, insisted on a proper look at the events.
As compensation I hope, if you choose to explore the post, you may find plenty of content that captures the drama of the role the city played during the war.

Let's be honest. If you had been at Ciudad Rodrigo and then marched on to Badajoz, when you got there, you would take one look at the place and desert |

Hi Chaps, Thanks for your comments and I am glad the length of the post doesn't appear to have been too overwhelming. Trajanus – Yes indeed, the fact that a lot of the outer works around the city wall including the glacis and ditch doesn't take anything away from the formidable height and thickness of the walls that remain in situ; and when you stand at the bottom and imagine climbing a ladder up them that is most likely too short, with a bloke at the top trying to stick you with a bayonet or boarding pike, it really makes you appreciate the courage of the chaps that did it for real. Thanks again fellas, next up I will be looking at the cavalry battles in the area of which there are several, together with Bloody Albuera. JJ |
