Your list of top Generals is very Myopic. The best Generals are always on the other side or a Proud Troop slaughtering Russian.
United Kingdom and Canada: 2,721 killed 7,939 wounded 2,183 missing United States: 2,811 killed 6,471 wounded 686 missing. So Sicily was about even.
Slapping a Shell shock Soldier was wrong and he was Punished.
He liked the Press but so did Monty.
The German got off Sicily because the Air Forces & Navies Promised no German would be able to cross back to Italy.
I know that Monty's wonderful pursuit of Rommel after El Alamein was the proper way to advance after a beaten Army.
As the Your Northern Bulge statement.
Ask a veteran of any of the American Units in the North What they thought of Monty's Leadership. Ask the Men of the US 2nd Armor who Disregard his orders and attack the German 2nd Armoured Division ( It was out of gas ) But still Monty thought "stabilizing the line was more Important then destroying a whole Division.
Ask the US Forces in St. Vith, Who after bottling up the German advance, get order to pull back. It took a Great many more lives later to retake St. Vith back. Once again we had to " Stabilize the Line"
Monty was only saved after his speech about saving the US Force by the same man who saved Patton. Eisenhower
