"Paul Andrew Hutton's "The Apache Wars" is a major work of history on a much-neglected subject. Ask most any American to name our longest war, and they're bound to reply Iraq or Afghanistan. Not even close — not yet, anyway. Beginning in 1861 and lasting for the better part of three decades, Americans, both civilian and military, battled warriors of the Apache tribes of the Southwest in fights which stretched from southern Arizona to New Mexico and often across the border into Mexico. The fighting was unrelentingly savage, and for much of the war the regular U.S. Army was ineffective.
