"In honor of the 242nd anniversary of the Battle of Brandywine today, I have compiled a gallery of artistic depictions of it. These are 19th and 20th century illustrations, and usually suffer from anachronisms. Please use caution if using them for historical/costume/wargame reference. However, they are wonderful in capturing a "moment" in time, even if the fine details do not hold up under scrutiny. Enjoy!…" See here link Amicalement Armand

It is always interesting to see how artists over the years represent different aspects of the battle. The first two pictures show British grenadiers and Hessian grenadiers rushing forward in a charge. While the British grenadiers were engaged it is hard to imagine them charging in that manner and as far as the Hessians, they were not engaged and the British were contemptuous of the slowness of their advance. |

One thing you can be sure of from 20th century and especially 19th is that the uniforms will be wrong, sometimes horrendously so--like British Grenadiers in Hessian-style mitre caps. It's only fairly recently that accurate depictions have become more common (Charles McBarron, Troiani, etc). And to give credit to contemporary artists, Della Gatta. |
