"Comprehensive Online Site?" Topic

I've recently begun research for a novel that I propose to write (nothing to do with the American Civil War). In my research I've spent a lot of time looking at the National Library of Australia's Trove site, found at trove.nla.gov.au."

During a period of procrastination and a moment of boredom, I looked up some references to the American Civil War. Here is one example, trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/page/1483546. It is from the Sydney Morning Herald of 7 October 1861 and focuses on the Battle of Bull Run. [Yes, news from America took a while to reach Australia.] Many earlier newspaper articles published around April 1861 were discussing "conspiracy" (in relation to the transfer of arms and ammunition to arsenals in the south by John B. Floyd prior to the war) and the plans of Southern States to form a vast empire encompassing Cuba, Mexico and other lands.

I have often looked at various sites in the U.S.A. to uncover and read period documents. My query: is there a free and comprehensive site in the U.S.A. that is like Trove?

Alas, the short answer is "no."

I had never heard of Trove. Now I have yet another means to fritter away my life. Thank you.

I find myself easily distracted on Trove. I'll find myself researching one thing then reading through the whole paper.

And now, thanks to trawling that site, I have discovered the International Year of Mountains was in 2002….
