Which would win in a showdown, a Steve Jackson Games' OGRE or a BattleTech 'Mech? (Any model of your choice.) |

Ogre, it uses nukes as standard ammo! |

How many mechs should you send to fight an Ogre? How many GEVs are needed to stop an Ogre? |

Ogre, another way to look at it is to compare powered armor. While a mech is tougher, it is still vulnerable to a couple of squads. A couple of squads of infantry is just going to scratch an Ogre. |

At first I thought, "Well if you have Enough mechs…" But then I reread the original post and saw that it was an Ogre against ONE mech! Take any mech you like and it loses against an Ogre. Heck take a dozen mechs or two dozen, and you still lose. |

Ogre. For reasons others have noted. |
Lion in the Stars | 06 Sep 2019 12:37 p.m. PST |
Yup. ORGEs have armor thicknesses measured in meters. plural. OGREs throw nuclear shaped charges around. A 'Mech is going to evaporate under OGRE fire. |

Yep, the cybertank hands down. Remember, OGREs are like onions . . . They make people cry. |

Ah, but suppose the fight is on another planet? Then the mech wins by default because the dropship ain't been built than can haul an OGRE… |
Zephyr1 | 06 Sep 2019 2:59 p.m. PST |
You don't need a dropship. Just open the bomb bay and drop the OGRE on the 'mech… |
Sargonarhes | 06 Sep 2019 7:10 p.m. PST |
I wouldn't use a battlemech against an OGRE, now a Gundam especially a more advance model would stand a chance. The Turn A Gundam Gundam X twin satalite cannons Wing Zero They could crush an OGRE. |

There's no hatches because there's no crew. No, I think a Warlord Titan might do okay as it's really big and has void shields and volcano cannons etc. For a mech, you'd want something with PPCs. Focused particle beams should be able to damage weapons or tracks at least. That's all you can really do with an OGRE. Slow it down or disarm it. Meters of nuke proof BPC / c60 armor just make it too hard to kill. A Trepidia grav tank can probably kill an OGRE, if the 250mj plasma gun won't do it, ramming at mach 3 might. If you want to start a Traveller flame war, Virus would have a lot of fun with OGREs. |
TNE2300 | 07 Sep 2019 4:07 a.m. PST |
Virus would have a lot of fun with OGREs. it certainly would but 'mechs are computer controlled as well ;) now all I can picture is a company of 'mechs forming a kickline |

Ogre vs. Mech: A short play OGRE: A walking tank. That's new. Sound of metal crumpling and crunching under Ogre treads. OGRE: Hmm. Will need to clean that out. FIN |
Lion in the Stars | 07 Sep 2019 12:29 p.m. PST |
Ah, but suppose the fight is on another planet? Then the mech wins by default because the dropship ain't been built than can haul an OGRE… They built dropships big enough to carry BOLOs, they can build dropships big enough to carry OGREs. Remember, BOLOs are so big that they are described as 'Planetary Siege Units' or 'Continental Siege Units' There's no hatches because there's no crew. There's still maintenance access hatches. But OGRE (power-armored) infantry doesn't do so well against OGREs. I wouldn't use a battlemech against an OGRE, now a Gundam especially a more advance model would stand a chance. I dunno about that, even Gundams worried about nuclear warheads, while an OGRE just kinda shrugs them off. |

Katzbalger | 08 Sep 2019 4:12 p.m. PST |
A Type III Ogre would be hell on a Mech Regiment, let alone a single assault mech. Not even in the same ball park, nor playing the same game. Yu[--no point in a survey. Rob |

From the Steve Jackson Forums ( link ) GURPS Ogre has weights. Here they are:
Mk I: 1,535,594 lbs. ( 768 tons ) Mk II: 2,262,875 lbs. ( 1,131 tons ) Mk III: 3,778,281 lbs. ( 1,189 tons ) Mk IIIB: 4,141,507 lbs. ( 2,071 tons ) Vulcan: 3,271,045 lbs. ( 1,636 tons ) Fencer: 3,332,071 lbs. ( 1,666 tons ) Mk IV: 5,309,677 lbs. ( 2,655 tons ) Mk V: 4,689,456 lbs. ( 2,345 tons ) Ninja: 5,092,755 lbs. ( 2,546 tons ) Mk VI: 6,385,540 lbs. ( 3,193 tons ) Doppelsoldner: 6,827,706 lbs. ( 3,414 tons ) Remember that GURPS Ogre isn't canon. I think it's a great book, for the glimpse into the world of Ogre that it provides, but it's not canon. So to me, you have a 100 ton Atlas vs. a 768 Ton Ogre ( minimum at 1st Gen ) . Enough Said? |
Ghostrunner | 09 Sep 2019 6:09 a.m. PST |
Probably a very geeky comment, but hard for me to buy a Mark V being outweighed by the Mark IV or the Ninja. And the Mark III looks way too light compared to the II or IIIB. |

Not Battletech but… Nano-mechs. Tiny enough to get inside the Ogre through gaps in engineering hatches… can then go nuts on the tech inside. A teleporter… to teleport devices inside the Ogre, bypassing all that armour. Are ogres EMP proof? |
Ghostrunner | 10 Sep 2019 5:02 a.m. PST |
Are ogres EMP proof? Given that they can take direct nuke hits and keep moving, they must be at least EMP resistant. |
Parzival | 10 Sep 2019 9:54 a.m. PST |
"Nano-mechs." ??? What the heck does that even mean? Nano-sized walking tanks? How would you even build one? What would be the point? Are these even a thing in Battletech? But, no, that's not gonna take out an Ogre. Nano technology is over-rated as a threat, because nano-machines are extremely fragile. Add even a small amount of heat to their environment, and they will be destroyed as their microscopic parts expand, fuse, or simply burst— and that's just one option. You mention EMP— that's instant death for nanites. But of course, if we're dealing in realism, then neither Ogres or ‘mechs make any actual sense… |
Lion in the Stars | 10 Sep 2019 11:10 a.m. PST |
OGREs make more sense than 'Mechs. OGREs are obscenely big tanks, because of a materials science breakthrough of immensely strong armor (diamond fibers in carbon matrix, IIRC), where even a couple cm of BPC would require over a ton of TNT to breach (BPC is roughly half the weight of steel for the same volume, too!). When you can armor an air-cushion vehicle or infantryman so heavily that it cannot be killed by conventional explosives, well, you need to start throwing nuclear shaped charges around (yes, those exist IRL). |
