"The Space Force will get its own National Guard branch if Congress decides to create the new military service in its 2020 defense policy bill.

The Defense Department will establish the Space National Guard in tandem with the Space Force and will have basic headquarters and staffing set up by the beginning of next year if Congress gives it the green light, Brig. Gen. Patrick Cobb, special assistant to the National Guard Chief for space, told Federal News Network in an exclusive interview…"

Well, that is interesting.

To be an actual, and viable "Space Force", one has to have actual Space Craft, other than that little X-37B drone.

I hope we eventually get back to the point where we can send our own astronauts back into space instead of depending upon our "not friends nor allies", the Russians, to help us with that.

Congress never should have let that happen in the first place.

And the bureaucracy grows…

You can have ground-based space defenses. If a hundred thousand volunteers with laser pointers all step outside at the same time and aim at a specific satellite I bet you could confuse its cameras (ha, ha). And for ten thousand dollars I bet you can build a jammer. That's if a handful of clever hobbyists do it. If the government does it it's a hundred million.

Which brings us to the real point of it: we think of the military as defending us. Congress members see the military as a way to spend money in their district. Necessity and Efficacy have a tertiary role in government spending decisions. I bet you could convince nearly every person in congress to fund a subterranean militia to defend our way of life from the mole people if you told them it would require spending a billion dollars in their district.

One is reminded of the Terry Pratchett joke about a certain section of Ank Morpork in which 987 women reported their profession as "seamstress" and they had a total of two needles among them.

Odd, considering we don't have a National Guard version of the Navy.

I think this needs to go over to The Duffle Blog…

Does that mean the ROTC kids will be known as Space Cadets?

"Congress members see the (Space National Guard) as a way to spend money in their district. "

This. Being given a place at the gov't trough is the only way they'll approve it…

Ground forces can be run by the army.

There is a sort of National Guard version of the Navy, just not active in all states, at least per Wikipedia: link

And there is a Naval Reserve/Navy Reserve as well, though that's an entirely Federal organization.

Virginia may have advantages for a Space Guard--since it has state-owned launch facilities, if there ever is a true Space National Guard, with space assets.
