Thanks guys, Shagnasty its entirely possible, quite a few Swedes learnt their trade in other armies.

From what I've seen in Russian sources, he started his military carreer fighting against Denmark in Skone war, so probably not. His family was of German origin.
Interesting that he was serving Peter the Great from 1712 to 1721 as a general of Russian army.

Ah so serving against the Swedes, remember that the Swedish Empire included a lot of North Germany as well as the Eastern Baltic states so still possible they were related.
