Hi all,

I will be in London from 1 – 7 Sep, all next week basically. Was wondering if there was a club playing games that I could drop by and see and say Hi?

Cheers,

Scott

I highly recommend Central London Wargames Club. I visited in April and the guys there were great, the pub they meet at is close to a tube station too. Mondays and Thursdays about 1800.

Hi Scott,

You would be welcome to drop in for a game at The Exiles on a Thursday evening. We game in the basement of the Crown and Cushion pub close to Waterloo station, starting around 1830.

As mentioned on our website ( link ) we play one game per session in which everyone plays. So no chance of you just being shunted to one side just to watch everyone else play. We will even buy you a drink or two, to make you feel more welcome. On Thursday, 5 September the scheduled game is 1980s Afghanistan.

We have had a few visitors from outside London, and outside the UK, over the years. Some of them have been kind enough to leave comments on TMP. If you search for the word 'Exiles' you should find these comments.

Hope that you can make the game on 5 September and please let me know if you want anymore information on the Exiles or things to see and do in London. We are very close to the Imperial War Museum and the Waterloo branch of the Dark Sphere shops ( darksphere.co.uk )

Thanks,

Ezza

Ezza, many thanks, that sounds like just the thing I was after. Will check the two links out for details. Do a bit of a map recon for the trains I need and hope to see you there on Thursday. Thanks again for the kind offer. Oh and I am coming from Canada.

Cheers,

Scott

Didn't know about the Exiles, but I can vouch for the CLWG. Great bunch of guys, they even bought me a pint,

BTW Scott, I am Canadian too and will be looking up both clubs next time I go over. Wargaming in a pub just seems right,

Mike

Scott – Great and hope to see you on Thursday. Just shout if you need help with directions, but once you get to the Crown and Cushion go to the bar and look left towards the fireplace. To the left of the fireplace is a door, we will be through there and down the stairs in the basement.

Mike – Happy to extend the invitation given to Scott to you too. When do you think you may be over here?

On you both being Canadian, I think that most of our overseas vistors have come from Canada. Always interesting to hear about other people's gaming experiences from different parts of the world.

Ezza,

Well I will be there. Who can pass up a gaming night, and in an English Pub to boot. Do they sell meat pies???

Cheers Mike and I agree, best location for a gaming night, the true meaning of Beer and pretzels gaming! I am in Ottawa.

Cheers,

Scott

Scott,

Sorry, no meat pies here but quite a good selection of Thai and Lao dishes to try. There is a restaurant upstairs from the pub and they are happy to bring dishes down to the basement.

I have just found out that our gaming schedule for September was a bit messed up. So it's no longer 1980s Afghanistan for when you visit. Instead it will be 15mm ACW using the Fire & Fury rules.

Ezza, no worries.

ACW sounds great, I have the rules but never played using them, so this will be good.

See you Thursday.

Scott,

Great and we will see you on Thursday. The Fire & Fury rules are quick to pick up, being our go to set for ACW games. So we should have you up and running in no time.

Scott,

No problem and thanks for dropping by when you were in London. We did though have a bit of a surreal moment around 15 minutes after you both had left. A third Canadian arrived! This time from London, Ontario. He is visiting England for a couple of weeks and decided to come down for a game. He did though look a bit confused when the first question we asked him was if he had been at a wargames convention with two Canadians who had just left before he arrived.

Safe travels back and drop me an e-mail so that I can send you a stack of scenarios ,as promised.

Thanks,

Ezza

Ezza,

The confused look on my face is the default setting. I thoroughly enjoyed my visits to the Exiles, and recommend dropping in to anyone in the Waterloo/Lambeth region of London. The Crown and Cushion is a fun venue, and the food is great. Dave's glass-handling skills need some work, though.

When I found the stairs to the basement, one of the staff was coming up. She asked if I was looking for the toilets. When I said that I was looking for the gamers, she gave me a slightly pitying look, and pointed down the steps.

I hope to get back again in the next couple of years.

Jim
