Yes, the somewhat "unloved" 3rd edition of G.W.'s Space Marine.
Just got some of the original 3 books (Rules/Battles/Armies) but am having trouble with the detachment cards: How do you fill in the sheets? What is Reserve Speed? Morale value & Half Strength?
Can't find a reference in the rule book. Thanks

Try here ( netepic.org ), that's the fan-continued version of the Epic40k rules.

(Personally, I much prefer Epic:Armageddon, but that's me)

Space Marine. Before flyers.

alot of the information you are referring to is located in the Battles and Armies books and not the Rule book itself.

Hope this helps,
Tom D

I personally love the 3rd edition. Just sayin'

Epic 40K is my favorite.

Netepic is for continuation of 2nd edition Space Marine / Titan Legions.

There is a facebook page for Epic 40000:
link

And there's a section of the Tactical Command forum for Epic 40K:
link

Yeah, you find different parts in different books.

GW has said publicly twice (in print) that they will not revive Epic. I'm still hoping they do though, particularly in light of Aeronautica Imperialis being released next week.

The old "Space Marine" 6mm game was my second favorite, only behind Space Hulk.

Glad to see people are still gaming it. I miss those old tiny Land Raiders!

Although it would seem to spread them pretty thin, I can't imagine not having some form of Epic 40K follow up Titanicus II, and now the Aeronautica thing.

At least testing the waters, using a small number releases intended as supporting elements for titans.

The new Apoc is probably as close as you'll get.

why do you feel that Epic:Armageddon is better ?

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP30 Aug 2019 7:54 a.m. PST

I know I do, and I started with Epic in '89. old fart

With SM2/TL being their worst attempt …

parrskool30 Aug 2019 9:32 a.m. PST

I quite liked the original black book ed. 1
…… but it didn't have the range of vehicles & me.
Epic 40000 is better than ed. 1 or 2 I think.

Yes, SM1/AT/CT was much better than SM2/TL. But they didn't finish it/flesh is out before they went to SM2/TL. Which IMO SM2/TL is as much about gaming with massive forces as well as selling in HUGH numbers of minis. But there we a few things we liked about it.

We added, cherrypicked and modified rules to suit us. But based a lot on SM1. As we were primarily historical games and I served 10 + year in the US ARMY in 4 Inf Bns.

So IMO SM2/TL was more of a Sci-Fantasy game. Not appealing to more long time experienced gamers. We started gaming in the '60s. old fart Who have a historical and real world background. And liked a more hard corps Sci-fi, like Hammer's Slammers. But that is just us, everybody should do what works for themselves and their local gaming group. Not us … evil grin

parrskool31 Aug 2019 8:36 a.m. PST

Yes, agreed.

I didn't like the Firepower charts, and really don't like Death Rays.

At least not in a ground game. GW used almost the same mechanics in BFG, which worked fine.

Epic 40,0000 3rd Edition is the best! Stick with what you have, parrskool, you can't go wrong! With regards to the detachment sheets, you could always use my handy form-fillable, auto-calculating detachment cards:

bit.ly/2lshNo7

And the Tyranid one:

bit.ly/2jVeYLF

I also posted those in the Facebook group that Andy linked you to. If you open those with Adobe Acrobat (Reader or Pro), the point total and morale of the unit should automatically calculate when you enter the point values for any individual units. Don't use a non-Acrobat program as it might screw up the auto calculation feature.

For the record, reserve speed is the slowest speed unit in the detachment (so if you have a bunch of 35cm movement units and one 15cm speed unit, your reserve speed is automatically 15cm because that is the slowest). Morale is 1 point of army morale for every 50 points of the detachment (or part thereof). A detachment that costs 301 points adds 7 points of army morale to your starting morale total (301 divided by 50 is 6.02, which rounds up to 7). Half strength is just what it says on the tin… if you have 13 units in a detachment then it hits half strength once 7 have been destroyed and 6 remain.

Reserve speed is used in scenarios where the detachment will come on as reinforcements. Typically, detachments with a reserve speed of 35cm or faster get a better chance of coming onto the table each turn.

Morale is your army morale… think of it as the hit points of your entire army. At the end of every turn, both sides lose a number of morale equal to their current blast markers on all units, or the full morale value of a detachment if it has dropped to half strength or less etc.

Half strength is… well, I just explained what it is for. It is the threshold at which you lose a ton of morale because you let the detachment get too beat up.

I am pretty sure most of these rules are explained in the first dozen or so pages of the Battles Book.

L4, I'd love to be able to post on TacComs; I changed my email address for the site back in March, and have yet to have my account confirmed/reactivated. Created a new account to see if that would receive some attention, and have never received an activation notice.

Not much point in attempting to use a resource that isn't capable of being used, is there?

Thanks, AM! Neat form.

Thanks L4!

@KJ – I am very sorry that your account got lost in the mix. If you could drop me an email I will get that sorted out the best I can for you.
