Which was half the problem of course. the trick was to make sure they did not get any further!

Well I had thought Ged's Gringos40 range in 28mm was a bit short of opponents for the Marines in Hue. Clearly the range has expanded unknown to me.

Another nice vignette (nice unless you are ARVN of course)

they look very nice, Outstanding work. Asians however don't really have 5 o'clock shadow. They are closer to Hezbollah fighters here, I believe it is very easily correctible.

oldnorthstate28 Aug 2019 4:03 p.m. PST

They really don't look very Asian…I appreciate seeing the nicely painted figures but I won't be buying them to create diorama's…how 'bout some mounted for wargaming and deployed in a game?

Only the one on the left has hair that looks right. Maybe the other two haven't washed their hair in weeks, so it's all clumpy and frizzy.

That one looks more Vietnamese – though it would be hard to keep his hair so neat. A kind of crew cut or perhaps flat top with the sides almost shaved seems to have been more normal.

Just nit-picking. Great figure and well painted too.

deadhead +1

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP20 Sep 2019 7:38 a.m. PST

I have been catching up with the TV series "The Vietnam War" recently reshown on our BBC4 and still on I-player for a few days more. Missed it first showing and we only get a 55 minute version of what was originally shown on PSB in USA.

Great film sequences and enhanced sound. Poor old ARVN hardly feature and it as much about home politics and demos as the conflict itself. But the tapes of LBJ and Nixon are simply staggering.

The grinning NVA chap explaining why they massacred so many in the retreat from Hue was chilling. Never knew about the arm marking. I thought this was the VC flag missing the star!

jammy four Sponsoring Member of TMP21 Sep 2019 12:38 p.m. PST

Liam

the arm marking was exclusive to Hue and was sanctioned by Hanoi and of such colour as to be distinctive,,,though when white cloth was unavailable white paper was used in conjunction with cloth,

and now a chap with grenades, seen here in retreat also I hope!

and they still keep coming. Again the work of Andy Simgleton.

Somehow this character has that real hard core NVA look about him. Illegitimi….

picture

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP29 Oct 2019 11:38 a.m. PST

That was Singleton! Not Simgleton……I find the latter almost impossible to say. Why do I keep getting his name wrong?

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP30 Oct 2019 6:16 a.m. PST

Chap in a bush hat now…..and a rather fetching scarf. Claret and Blue scarf for me next Saturday, (seven hours on a train to watch 90 minutes of mediocrity)…..at least it is not Rouge.

picture

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP01 Nov 2019 1:41 a.m. PST

and the latest, painted up, is carrying a B40, the RPG 2, which was such a menace to armour fighting in that built up area.

Another nicely painted pair. Seems this mortar team is a mix and match from the two mortar teams in Ged's range;

"Someone call in an airstrike or two!"

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP05 Nov 2019 11:43 a.m. PST

I'd take naval gunfire, artillery from an FSB, nape strike from a Sandy or a couple of Zippo M60s if it stopped these chaps.

Shame was, in the end, it did not….I cannot get beyond feeling that these are too like Waffen SS for my shelves. Illegitimi. Funny thing, I always had far more respect for Vietcong, but that had no real basis beyond the liberal anarchist philosophy of the time

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP05 Nov 2019 3:16 p.m. PST

Any of those should do the job ! But I do have a predilection for airstrikes and Naval Gun Fire. I was trained to call-in both !

Not sure who I dislike more of the SS or the VC ?

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP06 Nov 2019 2:49 a.m. PST

I meant M48's not M60s for the Zippos, but I am blowed if I can tell the two tanks apart

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP06 Nov 2019 8:16 a.m. PST

Understand … I max AFV ID even as a cadet ! evil grin But I build a lot of AFV models in my youth, including both the M48 and M60. And of course later I was around a lot of M60A1s and even a few M48s as memorials, targets, etc.

There was an M48 at the entrance to our Mech Hvy Bde's location at Benning. Along with an old M59 APC. The M113's ancestor. Both painted up in the current 3 color camo.

Also at that time many of our allies were still using M48s too.

GHQ shows some excellent pics of their models of the M48 and M60.
link

The turret of the M60A1 is "pointed". The M48 rounded.

The M60A1 front hull is flat, not curved like M48.

The M60A1 has no muzzle break at the end of it's 105, but a bore evacuater in the middle of the 105.

The M48 has a muzzle brake at the end of the 90mm.

Note: there is a version of the M48 with the 105, the M48A5. Check out the GHQ link. ghqmodels.com/store/n17.html

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP06 Nov 2019 8:39 a.m. PST

The GHQ link is great for this. (What amazing models too! How 1/300 approx. has changed since 30 years ago) I tried Wiki but as I went between the two variants I could not see the difference.

Now you point it out, the turret is totally different. The bowed instead of flat front, let alone the gun details.

What I did learn from Wiki was that the M60 did not see action until Yom Kippur 73.

That was very interesting. I am obsessed with minor details like that! thanks mucho

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP07 Nov 2019 12:59 p.m. PST

Glad to help !

But I'm pretty sure the IDF got M60s during the '73 War. link

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP07 Nov 2019 2:32 p.m. PST

Yes, that was exactly what I meant. That was the first time the M60 fired a shot in anger. 1973 Yom Kippur. Like yesterday….

Funny thing that Israeli armour and tactics were so based on (if actually better than) an earlier war's panzer divisions' blitzkrieg.

Bit like Bf 109s against Spitfires, where we cheer on the former (Israelis vs Egyptians). A Bf 109 with a Star of David, few years after the KZ camps, on the side! Or at least once, Spits fighting Spits…but this is way off VN. Apologies…I "do" tangents…

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP08 Nov 2019 9:14 a.m. PST

Yes the IDF used those M60s to good affect on the Arab armor.

And yes, basically most modern combined arms warfare is based on the Blitzkrieg.

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP12 Nov 2019 2:59 a.m. PST

Great use of colour variation in these two. I may yet swallow mu principles, but then if Ged does soon release new Marines…
