For more than 300 years the shrill sound of a bosun's pipe and a shout of ‘up spirits' would be heard on board Royal Navy ships, and sailors lined up for their daily ration of rum or grog. link |

Ah yes, rum, sodomy and the lash |

And we still 'Splice the Main Brace' on special occasions like a Royal visit – 2 ounces of Lambs Navy Rum and a can of coke. I enjoyed that 3 times in my 22 years Service! Unfortunately Lambs Navy Rum – which is in the absence of stores Pussers Rum is what is used instead from commercial sources – is not on sale in Australia! IMHO Appleton Estate Jamaica rum comes closest, after Pusser's Rum from BVI of course – also rare as hen's teeth in Aus! |

MajorB- there really wan't that much sodomy on navy ships- it was against religious conventions, and ships were not private places. From what I have read, reports were very rare- it is only in the imaginations of novelists and critics of the navies. Yes, there were some cruel captains (more so in the merchant marine) in the navy, but still a rare occurrence and again, mostly in the imaginations of anti-corporal punishment writers of the 19th century. |

Pusser's had webstore a little while back pussersrum.com Looks like it still is up and running I once had the great good fortune to enjoy a Painkiller on their island. I can't imagine what shipping would come to getting it to Australia, best of luck! |

Used to be able to get Pussers fairly easily – a big chain here – Dan Murphys – used to run it, so Painkillers were a feature of every BBQ, but alas no more! |

Pusser's Gunpowder Proof – I highly recommend it. |
