Anytime I see something written about them there is never any mention of the bomber squadron or any mention of their exact missions. Obvious this illegal mercenary wing gets whitewashed with American exceptionalism, but after this many years I would expect a more in depth knowledge of their purpose and make up to come forward. |

I too grew up with the idea that they were both idealists and yet also mercenaries, fighting in and for China years before Pearl Harbour. The real story is totally different. They formed up in Burma, very secretly and with no plane markings to start with, so as to avoid compromising British Empire neutrality. Illegal? Yes, I guess so. But they did not fire one shot in anger until December 7th was on them! Within 6 months they were absorbed into the USAAF, so a short existence, but highly publicised, when the US needed some good news.
P40s could and theirs did carry bombs, but there was no Flying Tiger true bomber squadron. (Despite John Wayne's "heroics") They wore the "coolest" (I rarely use that word, but, in this case….) leather flying jackets ever designed. Much written on them. The Osprey book is very good and avoids sensationalism.

A more cynical and non-idealistic perspective on the Flying Tigers can be found in Boyington's autobiography "Ba Ba Black Sheep". There is also some coverage of their operations in volume 2 of Shores/Cull/Izawa's "Bloody Shamples", which gives an interesting perspective on fighter claims. MH |
