…The use of lasers by dismounted soldiers will bring a number of new combat advantages. For quite some time, laser weapons, often mounted from ships or armored vehicles, have been used as both an offensive weapon and a "sensor" able to find targets. Lasers can be scalable, meaning they can either combine several beams or fire in more narrow configurations, providing options. The emergence of this defensive laser detection system, it seems self-evident, could also be adapted for soldier-fired offensive laser weapons. Not only do lasers travel at the speed of light, but they are stealthy – quiet. They can be fired silently, thus making it more likely that attacking soldiers may not give up their position… link |

I hope the anti-laser goggles are really good, otherwise we'll see a large wave of blind people around the globe due to this, if they aren't powerful enough to kill outright. |

The laser 'pre-shot-detection' only works to see if someone using a glass optic is looking your direction. Achmed the Jihadi doesn't even use iron sights… And an infantry-portable laser weapon is going to take an incredible amount of power to make usable. A rifle bullet carries roughly 2000joules of (kinetic) energy, and takes at most 1/1000 of a second to deliver it into the target. This means that an infantry laser rifle needs a 2 megawatt laser beam. Maybe even a 20MW laser. |

To add some perspective to Lion's numbers- The entire output of the laser light-show at the Hayden Planetarium (NYC) in the 1980's was One Watt. |

Yeah, a laser rifle will be all fun & giggles until it's used during thunderstorm conditions and an errant lightning bolt traces itself back to the shooter along the ionized trail… :-p |
