Can anyone enlighten me as to whether Prussian and allied Jager carried flags into battle and if so what they looked like. Particually interested in Prussia but allies would be a bonus. Thanks in anticipation. |

No, I do not believe that light infantry carried flags into battle, even if they were issued them. Jim |

Thanks guys, I'm doing this in 6mm using Baccus. There are formed and skirmish Prussian and allied Jager figures available and the Baccus website shows formed Jager with flags. There is also a flag sheet with a Jager flag on it. Like "Jurgenation" I suspect if they existed they were restricted to the parade ground and not taken into battle. If anyone know differently please comment. |

Hi, Prussian Jager battalions were certainly issued with flags. Whether they carried them into battle is a moot point. I have found no reference to it for either 1866 or 1870-71. That said, there is a famous painting by Ernst Zimmer which shows the 9th Jagers (Lauenburg) charging at the Battle of Gravelotte St Privat which contains a representation of their battalion colour. So, you pays your money and takes your choice! |

Yes, as mollinary said, the Jäger had flags, but I think they left them in their home garrisons. I studied three regimental histories (Guard, no. 7, no. 10) and in contrary to the infantry regiments (where often the flags are mentioned during the battles) no remarks about the flag. Additionally the photos of the Jäger battalion soldier sent to Versailles at 18th January 1871 show no flag – also in contrary to the infantry, which always sent their flag. So, I would show Prussian Jäger without flags for the FPW. Greetings from Berlin Markus Stein |

Just to show the difference of appearance for the 18th of January 1871 – look at the photo of the Hessian Füsiliere no. 80 and Hessian Jäger no. 11
Kind regards Markus Stein |

Thanks Markus, I agree entirely with your conclusions, but didn't have access to your excellent sources to support them! |

And for those interested in the FPW, next year will be a large exhibition at the military museum of the German army in Dresden, covering the three "Einigungskriege", i.e. the wars against Denmark, Austria and France. … and a large book project will be announced soon :-) Greetings from Berlin Markus Stein |
