An awful lot of work went into that! Well done.


Understanding that sometimes you have to work with what you have, I do not think reef ties go back that far. A lot of later painters include them, and Rod Langton has included them in his 1/1200 Anglo-Dutch line, but I do not see any in any of the contemporary van de Velde paitings. But… since they were molded into the sails, I would have left them too.

You are correct – I believe the reef lines were introduced later.

In the 15-17th centuries, they usually used "Bonnets" for extra sail area during light conditions.
