Just read and reviewed the second part of Paul Dawson's two volume account of Imperial Guard uniforms and equipment. It was a bit of a disappointment after the Infantry volume, being even more data reliant, and with worse editing. It's still worth having. But… well, read my review and see what you think: link |

That is an extremely useful review. Thanks The current trend does seem to be to present minutiae such as monthly expenditure on foodstuffs, the towns where billeted, or the names of the farriers, in many such books. The poor editing is a real shame after we have waited so long for these two books to emerge. So many of the illustrations seem to have found their way onto the internet already. The Kinski (not a Kurtka, that is an even smarter lapelled jacket of Polish origin but worn by units varying from British Light Dragoons to Lancers of Berg) of the Eclaireurs is fascinating. It should be green but looks blue in your photo. Just as Marbot's outfit does in Musee de l'Armee. That is what time and UV does and it tends to prove the point once more. |

Seb I bring you back to life! I just received this book today from UK (thanks Paul Meeking etc.) and have poured through the first 75 pages… I can't disagree with a word you say- and those editing photo/ captions are horrendous mistakes. I actually came back to your post as I wanted to see- HAS THERE BEEN AN ERRATA UPDATE OR REPLACEMENT OFFERED from author or publishers?? While I only found one spelling mistake, a few shambolic grammatical errors (or are they too 'high-falutin' for a failed secondary schooler like me???) those quibbles are far below the editing problems. Add p22- the 'Hoffman' image that is replaced by a gold braided bonnet de police; and p44-45 bearskins that are not clearly identified when referenced as 3 different…The former I would like to see intact; the latter just clarified as detailed bit-part photos don't explain themselves. AND- as you cited the first three captions for the Rocco plates seem disorganised. The captions do not reference the image they support and the 'dragons' don't even get a mention in any- and that less than satisfactory image with a horses head succinctly hiding any of the trompettes holster caps seem superficially like a cop-out!Overall, I can see the research and depth of coverage is enormous and earth-shattering compared to previous documentation. I'll have to order the other volume now won't I? Cross link to first book (Infantry) :- TMP link regards ≠davew≠ |
