Question for the collective. When basing 28mm Successor pikemen, whats the thinking on how far apart to set each man. 20mm bases or 15mm to reflect the dense pack of sarissa?

I put my Seleucid phalangites on 20mm bases out of personal preference and it is my standard for 28mm ancients. A unit of phalangites is 24 figures on a 120mm x 80mm base. I can use it for Hail Caesar, Swordpoint, and Impetus.

Surely depends on the rules you are using?

Maybe he is only asking what looks visually appealing. I've heard that there are games in which base size doesn't matter that much, I don't know; merely speculating.

Nice and close, 15mm for me.

15mm frontage, if Wargames Foundry, or 20mm if Aventine (the latter look at their best with a wee bit more space).

15mm frontage looks much better than 20mm for close order pikemen and hoplites. 20mm is fine for Romans.

Sorry I should have been clearer but yes my question relates to those rules where grids determine the base size and the number of figures on the base is more of an aesthetic.

Simon is seeing things much the way I am as I am indeed working with Aventine figures (which are absolutely gorgeous) and spacing them at 15mm does look just a little too tight. I'll get a few more painted and add the shields before I make a final decision.

At present I've 38 figures and so am looking to base in multiplies of 3 or 6 figures but I suspect I'll end up adding a few more so I can end up with a phalanx 12 wide and 4 deep.
