I've been finding recent rule sets are sometimes coming out needing gridded terrain. And some of these are bloody good rules. To the Strongest and Rommel being two examples. So ATM Im thinking of getting a gridded mat, and Deep-cut do a couple of nice grass/meadow choices with rubber backing. So Im canvassing here for your opinions please guys! Do I go for 4" or 6" squares. I'll be playing using 6mm WW2 and 25mm/28mm Ancients/Naps armies. My hunch is 4", but I'd hate to find my Ancients not having an easy time! And if anyone has used Deep-Cut for gridded terrain mats, how noticeable are the grid lines? Im thinking of using a mid grey colour for the grid. Your advice from your own experience of gridded mats would be most welcome, thanks, |

Pesky rules writers! ;-) I can't answer for Rommel, but for TtS! most people use a 15cm grid in 28mm. All of the competitions are on 15cm. Regarding grids, the majority I sell these days are cross-grids. Instead of a solid line, they have a 25mm cross where solid grid lines would have crossed. They are very subtle – unless you are looking for them, you don't notice them – so you could also use them for non-grid games. link This would most likely be the mat you'd want: link Cheers, Simon |

Thanks for the tip on the grid size. That cross grid is pure genius. It's not something that Deep-Cut usually offer. I did have a look at your mats, but I want a rubber backed/mousepad mat, which unfortunately you do not list. (I'm also looking at Meadow as my preferred design!) Congrats on a great set of rules btw. |

Thanks- I'm sure they would print one for you. Meadow is very nice- quite a bright green. |

I use both: 150mm for To the Strongest and 200mm for For King or Parliament. It was easier than rebasing. |

I have quite a few gridded mats , moastly 15cm in all shades and finishing. All from Tinywargames.co.uk . They are very helpful and can normal do what you want |

I find a 6" grid works for most things, although on occasion a 3" grid useful. Just put a little dot in the middle of your 6" grid, and bingo, a 3" grid too. I made all my own gridded mats, but I do have a few plain Deepcut mats. Very nice they are too. |

I enjoy playing on a 4" grid because it fits my (Ancient/medieval) units which have a 60-80mm frontage. But I'm generally playing on a 12*9 grid, so a smaller table overall (4'*3'), but close enough to a 6" grid on a 6'*4' table. A 4" grid on a 6' * 4' table would give a bigger game altogether, with a grid 18 * 12. |

I got a non-cross grid type from Simon (BigRedBat). I actually prefer that version better, but it depends upon the person. The squares do not bother me, they are easier for me to see! |

Yes indeed- quite a few people prefer the solid line grids, as they are easier to see. I plan to stock both types, in most grid sizes. |

Some great replies here, thanks folks. I didnt realise Tiny made mats. Showing my age here, but to me Tiny was a PC manufacturer!! Some good looking terrain mats there. The definition and image texturing on the Big Red Bat mats are simply incredible. Last time I saw one I had to actually touch it to confirm it wasnt 3d terrain. But I do want the rubber backing/mousepad stability. So far the cross grid sounds like the best thing since sliced wotsit. Bloody genius. |
