This series of posts continues with a look at the Battle of Fuentes de Onoro, which, fought over three days saw Massena's last attempt to salvage something from the wreckage of the invasion of Portugal.

The first days action showed some of his earlier impetuosity displayed at Bussaco with a costly attack on the village, but after a day of skirmishing whilst 'feeling out' the Allied right flank, the brilliance of Massena showed through with a very dangerous attack on the third day that nearly turned the battle.

Nice shots of the village. Doesn't look to have changed much around those walled areas and in the lanes.

BTW: Which unit were the storks part of?

Thank you, the village really brings to life the accounts of the veterans, absolutely amazing.

I guess seeing as the Storks are in Bourbon white they have to be a Spanish ‘flying column'.

Brilliant report as ever. I can't second the recommendation of Paradors too strongly – my wife and I did a similar trip some years ago and stayed, as often as possible, in Paradors – they were uniformly wonderful.

Thanks, I did a similar trip, though usually sleeping rough, in the early 1990s and this brings back memories.
