Due out on November 8th, Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) tries his hand at WWII. First trailers show the movie will include the Pearl Harbor Attack and the Tokyo bombing run. Looks heavily CGI. Woody Harrelson as Nimitz and Dennis Quaid as Halsey. This is not a remake, Emmerich says he is making his version of the battle. We'll see. What do you think? |

Woody Harrelson? I like him, but I don't really see him as an admiral. I hope he does a good job with the role. |

"Emmerich says he is making his version of the battle." HIS version of the battle? Sigh. |

I am not an expert on naval-oriented WW2 movies—are there good ones on South Pacific naval clashes? That seems such a great area for all sorts of stories to tell. |

Emmerich doesn't pay attention to silly things like facts or history. A catalogue of bad movies. |

Lots of good movies on WWII in the pacific. Midway In Harms Way Run Silent Run Deep Yamato (Japanese) They Were Expendable Destination Tokyo Just to name a few The original Midway movie has errors in it, but still a good movie, Hopefully the new one is not a hack job. |

When I was a kid I used to watch all the old WW II movies. I remember one where James Cagney played Halsey. I liked them at the time and my younger brother is a big old movie fan now. I need to get back to them. I know I enjoy In Harms Way and the book too. |

though factual errors in "in harms way" the truth is stranger than fiction. Adm. Spruance was very lucky. |

Rusty, that's The Gallant Hours, a great behind-the-scenes leadership movie. Not a lot of action scenes, but a very good film. |

Dervel, you left out Tora, Tora, Tora which may be the best of the lot. |

Absolutely, was not meant to be an exhaustive list, but yes Tora Tora Tora is fantastic as well. |

And all of them have some factual errors I am sure :) After reading Shattered Sword it was interesting to contrast the original Midway movie to that book. |

My Dad took me to see the original Midway way back when. I'll probably take him to see this version. |

PT 109 was pretty good too. There was also a Japanese movie "Storm Over the Pacific" presenting the Battle of Midway from the Japanese perspective. Some impressive special effects of the battle all done with miniatures. link |

It's produced by Michael Bay of 'Pearl Harbor' infamy, so there's that. It's probably closer to 'Flyboys' in style and historicity though so just don't overthink it or be too critical and just sit back and enjoy the ride. |

I'm nervously excited about this. It was an amazing battle, and the original movie was great. With enhanced special effects and CGI they can potentially make an amazing movie. Of course they could do what "Pearl Harbor" did and mess it up! |

The Midway trailer is stirring as hell: YouTube link I'm in. All in. I liked Pearl Harbor – I though the fights were spectacular. |

"My Dad took me to see the original Midway way back when. I'll probably take him to see this version." Thanks for the great idea! will do just that. |

Looks like a video game to me. Don't know why CGI can't be done more like original actually film footage from old documentaries like War at Sea and others. This is just too much sensory overload that is totally unnecessary. I would have to agree that Tora Tora Tora one of the best for both visual and story. Kim |

Yee-ha! I grew up dreaming of flying a SBD in harm's way. My dad took me to see Midway also – in Sensurround. It should be fun, even if the history is a bit off. |

Looks like a great movie and I will enjoy it (I'm one of those type of guys that enjoys enjoying things) for what it is -- a movie. Just like I really enjoyed Pearl Harbor, the patriot, Braveheart, etc, etc, etc |

In college I wrote a paper on Torpedo Squadron 8. I am interested in seeing how that attack is handled in the movie. Their is an actor portraying George Gay. |

With any luck, I'll be in a theater that week to see it. Might take an extra week or two, depending on my work schedule. Yes I am frequently disappointed by historical war films. But I can't see why I should assume it will be poor. Might be poor, might be good. Starts with Pearl Harbor? So why would that not be a fitting start for a movie about Midway. Kind of sets the context. We also see the Doolittle raiders. More context. It seems to be a fitting background for understanding any of the characters who are serving in the USN by Midway. Some CGI fighters zooming around in the battle scenes? Don't know about the rest of you, but I kind of like some action in a movie about combat. I'd be disappointed if there weren't fighters zooming around and shooting stuff. A pilot looks at his picture of his girlfriend (maybe his wife?) as he dives on an enemy ship? Yeah, maybe he wouldn't look. Maybe he would. Or maybe his thoughts would go there even while his eyes stayed straight ahead. Hard to say. I was once on a twin-engine jetliner* over the arctic** when the pilot told us he might have to shut down an engine and he was looking for a place to land. First thing I did was take out my wallet and look at my family pics.*** So I have no objection to showing him pausing on that picture. And Woody Harrelson seems to have become a pretty versatile actor as he has grown older. I have no hesitation to give him a shot at the role of Nimitz. Yep, unless I hear it getting panned by those who have actually seen it, you can count me in. Hope I won't be disappointed. -Mark (aka: Mk 1) * A Boeing 767
** Actually we were over Hudson's Bay, but it was all frozen at that time, and I had been asleep until the Pilot's announcement, so we could have just as well been over the North Pole as far as I could tell. ***Yes, kids, in the years BSM (before smartphones) some of us men used to carry pictures of our girlfriends or wives (not usually both), and our children, in our wallets. |
