This fortnight we played a Blucher Scenario, The Battle of Sacile. This is one of the scenarios on the 'oldmeldrumwargamesgroup' site!
The sides were pretty evenly balanced in this game it was up to the French to strike fast early…well it turned out the reverse the French were very flow to deploy and get into action. The Austrians deployed well using their interior lines and effectively used their cavalry to slow the French right wing. on their other flank the Austrian anchored their defense on two towns/villages and were never threatened by the sluggish French. In fact they were able to go over to the offensive.
With no hope of a complete victory we stopped on turn 24 (out of 31) and gave the Austrians a 'minor' victory. We are going to replay this with 3 MO dice per side and see how the action resolves we found the recommended 2 MO dice per side lead to the battle developing too slowly to see an outcome.
Some pictures…
Archduke John (large base at the centre of the right edge) orders the densely packed units of his VIIIth Corps into action against the French left wing
The Austrians effectively used their cavalry to slow the French right inflicting casualties and forcing them into prepared postions!
Off course the 'Dice Shako' had to be given an outing!
The French right formed up against the Austrian defence but fail to advance due to the limits of their command structure and were actually counterattacked!
