Following the look at Bussaco, we worked our way back to the Spanish border stopping to take a look at the actions that characterised the French retreat from Portugal in 1811.
As always retreats are difficult manoeuvres for armies to pull off and the fighting tends to centre around natural choke points along the route, at rivers and bridges, but the fighting between the Allies and the French became eclipsed by the outbreak of hostilities among the French commanders as the stresses and strains of campaign took its toll.
