I've been informed by one of the U.K. companies that, due to Brexit, some URLs will be changing.

Some companies that are based in England, but also part of the European Union, chose to have URLs ending in .eu (for European Union).

Because of Brexit, many of these companies will be changing to URLs ending in .uk (for United Kingdom).

He did not say if this was a voluntary change, or required by E.U. regulations.

IIRC you can't have a national domain ending for a particular country if you are not in that country – so it makes sense to have to remove the .eu from UK based websites if the UK leaves the EU.

how very discriminatory of them …. like a spoilt child throwing its toys out of the pram .

David Manley07 Aug 2019 6:16 a.m. PST

I don't recall having come across any UK games companies that use .eu so I'm not convinced this will be a big issue

Basha Felika07 Aug 2019 10:35 a.m. PST

I'm with Dave on this – the use of .eu is negligible for UK companies – usually only when their preferred .com or .co.uk alternative isn't available.

I suspect this will be the least of our worries come November 1st.

Can anyone name one UK miniatures company whose domain ends in .eu?

Cerdic07 Aug 2019 11:58 a.m. PST

Or indeed, any UK company that uses .eu?

fantasque08 Aug 2019 2:09 a.m. PST

No, never seen it for a UK company and I look after the traders for a big wargames show and so am pretty familiar with their email and website addresses.
I cannot recall having seen it on any company URLs whether based in the UK or not.
So it is rare.

And "England" is not equivalent to "UK" Bill

From the looks of things, I think that the UK might do well to prepare for all the new England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland URLs.

Many eu domains redirect to the main domain either .co.uk or .com.

Dont know how many miniatures companies could be affected, probably the impact in them is near zero.

Will have a big impact in e-commerce, gambling, investment or banking companies which dont have a physical address in eu. They can keep the .com or .UK addresses but losing the .eu domain suddenly will probably mean someone else, who can prove eu residence, acquiring it and if good with SEO and company registration could mean a lot of money lost.

Funnily this has not yet gone the other way around, purely based eu companies can keep their UK domains. But I think this could change with the new prime minister, the announcement of the eu domain is from last November.

"Or indeed, any UK company that uses .eu?"

Barclays come to mind, but they will be able to keep it just transferring the ownership to Barclays Bank Ireland (probably its already done)
